Got a Spare $1,000?Last July was bad enough for motorists on a budget—gasoline prices had shot up to more than $4 a gallon. But for some the pain in the pocketbook was about to get worse. At City Garage in Euless, Tex., for example, the first of numerous future customers brought in an automobile whose fuel pump was shot. A quick diagnosis determined that that particular car had close to 18% ethanol in the fuel. For that unlucky owner, the repairs came to nearly $900. The ethanol fun was just beginning.

I dont know if ethanol would be destroying fuel pumps. Gasoline is just as bad - i've put gasoline in a plastic gallon water jug, and it thinned the plastic until it burst the next day sending a gallon of gas all over my carpet. As far as ethanol, humans can drink grain alcohol but they cant drink gasoline, do you really think its eating up fuel pumps?

See, this is why biologists aren't engineers.

The human body has the ability to repair itself. Cut your finger and it'll stop bleeding. Cut a fuel line on the car and it just keeps leaking and leaking.

There are some significant problems with high ethanol in fuels. There are somerubber and plastic parts that are quite tolerant of gasoline, but don't likeethanol at all. The higher the percentage of ethanol, the bigger the potentialproblem. And now the feds are talking about increasing the percentageof ethanol in typical gasohol to 15%.

I'm about to have to replace the gas tank on my boat for the second timedue to ethanol damage.

my owners manual says not to use ethanol fuel anyway. i try to avoid it as much as possible. plus many people i know get worse mileage with enthanol than with gasoline.
