I can assure you in California you are required to have front plates on. I live around L.A. and I have been pulled over many times for no front license plates(I have the same idea as you, and my plates are waaay too messed up to put them on after an accident). Even the parking ticket ladies target your car and you will get a ticket if it's even parked somewhere where they pass by. My advice would be get new plates or at least if you are going to pull them off, put the plates under the windshield when you park. While driving be aware that it's a very good reason to get pulled over so if you drive let's say under influence sometimes that's a magnet for po-po's.

Just my .02 cents.

Yeah i know its the law thats why im asking. But you see so many escalades and cts or even mercedes with no front plates and geeze the cops dont bother.I mean if theres no holes i can just say i bought the car like this!!!that works!!! But the cop will say theres no excuse thats when you say no speak english hahaha.............sorry got bored for a minute.

But real talk would they still be able to give you the ticket?ima have to research.

There will still be holes: the plate mount itself mounts to the bumper through two holes.

And it doesn't matter if there are holes or not. Even cars that are manufactured without front plate mounts (like the Pontiac Solstice) are still required to have front plates.

If CA is like UT, then yeah, you'll still get tickets for it. I hear local Corvette guys complaining about it occasionally.

Well if you do decide to put them off, if you get pulled over I always say "just got out of the body shop, didn't have time to put it on yet sir. as soon as i get some time I will have them do that too". it always passed until I scratched my bumper

Hahahaha i'll just say i got the car like that and the plates were ordered already.

Or i can just have it on the windshield which should be a problem should it?i was thinking of spray painting my plates the same color as they are but just to make them look new.

Think the windshield one could pass?

In Texas, windshield display is sufficient.

I live in San Carlos in the bay area and have yet to be pulled over (knock on wood as I type). The car never came with one and have passed many cops. It must be the lazy cops that live here. I have seen many q's without them, so I dont know, just lucky.

It's one of those laws that seem to be loosely enforced unless the officer needs a reason to pull someone over. Most likely you'd only get a warning, but you should be worried about what else they might find ... if anything.

Wasn't he the guy who used to write letter all the time to Car & Driver (or Road & Track ... I forget which one)?

Yes, he used to write complaining whenever they tested radar detectors, or did top speed testing....at first they made fun of him thinking he made his name up! Google has many tales of his love for busting speeders in my hometown,he wrote more speeding tickets than any other officer in Baltimore county!

For sure you have to have a front plate, but I have lived in CA all my life and never had a front plate on any of my cars. My Q45 i had the front bumper fixed a few years ago and there are no more screw holes, the PO hasn't mounted the front plate anyways and so I never bother. My X-Terra also has no front plate and I never put on the front mountin hardware.

Yes you can get pulled over, in LA probably more likely, in Santa Monica you will get a ticket if they already are ticking you for an expired meter or parkig where you don't belong (red, handicap) but those are NOT fix-it.

If you like the look without it, take it off. If you have all the mounting hardware anyways and the plate is already there, you don't get much by taking it off. My 97' looks WAY cleaner without it, might get a ticket one day but since 1977 I have driven in CA without a front plate and never got a ticket for it.

Well i live in east bay area (925).Cops here are so irratating. Its like theres no action so they bug people.I got put down in the computer for arrest on the spot if i loiter in front the liquor store that i always hang out at well only for like 15minutes max.

Well my friend also got pulled over for having no front plates but got off with a warning.

Tell me why i always knock on wood!!!

A story on how knocking on wood helps. If you stress you get the worse knocking on wood calms us down to not stress thats why the bad things don't come to us.Theres a movie called SECRETS watch it it'll explain.

Long story cut short my friend stole some ten bucks earrings to pierce his ears.I didnt know until security came out and took him.Next thing you know i see him running away.We were 5 deep at the time.I jumped in my car he jumped in i dragged the security guard that i knew. They got my plates so i went back because since i knew two people there and the security he said he let me off easy.Inside cuffed i KNOCKED ON WOOD,the bench we were on,so i wouldn't get charged with a hit-n-run.Turns out it worked after all.

Sorry had to write it lol but i guess i'll take my chances.

Bro, look at it this way....

Say you were drinking... lightly. A simple missing plate can lead to you being arrested.

If you look older... generally you WON'T get pulled over... but if you look young its best you put that plate on....

....and a MUST if you live in the Sacramento area. (no lie... I have been pulled 3 times in 2 hours in 1 night for no front plate). Thats ELK GROVE PD for ya.

When you're good... YOU can evade the police.

I guess I have been lucky, know on the wood but never had an issue. All my cars don't even look like they have a place for the plate now...so my story will always be "I bought it in Arizona" or "they stole it" not sure which I'll use....but my Q I don't even had the hardware to mount anymore.
