Last week I bid on a Q45 key blank on Ebay and won it for $26 shipped. I asked the Ebayer if any lock smith can cut the key blank and he said lock smiths with a "sidewinder" key cutter can do it. So I asked my local lock smith and he told me that he can cut the key for me. Well, today I took it to him and he cut it for me, one shot, one kill and it worked perfectly, in the doors and the ignition. He charged me $20 to cut it, so I spent a total of $46. I know it sounds expensive but I feel so much better knowing that I have a back up key. The key definitely doesn't look as cool as the factory Infiniti key but it works perfect. Oh, I forgot to mention, when I bought the car, it only came with one measley key.

Looks good. I need a spare key too, another thing on my to-do list. $20 to get it cut is fair, but $26 for the blank is a little much considering that they sell for $11 shipped on ebay. Check out Item number: 290217127224.

As Lino said you took it in the arse on the key but got a great deal on the cutting. I paid $50 and $45 to have my first two keys cut by locksmiths. I was going to brag that I just got my latest key cut for $30 at a local salvage yard which I thought was a great deal until I saw your thread.

I talked to the locksmith and the reason our keys are so expensive to duplicate is the cutting machine costs about $2800. It would take a long time to recover tha investment at $10/key, hence $20-$50 or more per key.

Thats much less than what dealers charge! The Infiniti dealers here actually use a local locksmith for that kind of work and refer customers directly.

when i got a copy of my old Q's key at the dealer back in 2001 it was like $70. it kinda sucked cause the end was plain black plastic (or whatever they use for keys) with no infiniti badging.

I just took a peak in the FAST for the oem keys, and noticed that there are 4 different keys available for my car. I never got all the keys with mine. Out of curiosity, which keys have the rubber and which ones are just metal?

Funny how they call the main key "fashion".
