My buddy has a 92 Q and his transmission will not manual shift from 1st to 2nd. It will manually downshift normally and functions normally when allowed to shift automatically. It has around 120K and he doesn't know if it has been rebuilt or not. Does this seem likely to be the TCU or the transmission itself. Thanks for any help.

The 90-93 Q starts in 2nd gear, for smoother starts...

its recommended to get a new TCU to have it start in 1st...

Does it already start off in 1st? If so, then he may already have an upgraded TCU from JWT or similar. The JWT's have no manual 1-2 shifting. '93 Qs start in 1st.

It starts in second, unless you manually move it into 1 before taking off. And if you manually take off in 1 and shift to 2, it stays in 1. You have to move it to 3 or D to get it out of 1. But everything else seems normal. Thanks for the responses.

Try the trans.diagnostic procedure from the FSM.Or, see if the linkage is bent, goofy, loose ETC.

1st gear is controlled electronically - everything else is linkage. I'd check 2nd to see if it'll hold in 2 at that position (after starting out in 2) - if not then it's probably something internal to the transmission or linkage. Otherwise, I'd suspect something in the 1st gear solenoid sticking that's not releasing correctly.

Just as a side note the transmission locks out 1st gear manual start in colder ambient temperatures before the car warms up. My dealership didn't know this, and before I learned it I got two warranty transmissions out of that!

Does the car drive normally otherwise?

He needs to buy my 1993 ECU/TCU combination that'll get him starting in 1st gear all the time! I just tested my spare set to Orlando and back and they work fine - so they'll be going in B/S/T in a day or two for $300 for the pair.

Thanks for the info. The car is driving and shifting normally otherwise, so I don't think he is going to mess with it. But I, on the other hand, will be getting a 93 TCU.

You can always manually shift from 1--2 with the shifter.....

I thought all shifts were initiated and controlled by the TCU.
