Well, if you didn't know...Ronald Reagan passed earlier after a long and weary battle with Alzheimer’s disease. I can't say much about the man because during his presidency I was a child. All I really remember of him were the SNL skits, Drug Awareness Week and a guy rapping in his voice. What I learned later on in my teenage years didn't help much either because the education we receive at school is filtered to only represent what the government wants us to know and the education we receive at home is filtered by our parent's prejudices. I can say this, he didn't blow us up, my parent's always had a job and I'm still not a slave (in the sense that my name is not Kunta Kinte and but I do get whipped a lot.)
However, I will say this: We as American's will mourn, celebrate or stay oblivious to who this man was and his passing but we should take this moment to reflect on our service to our country. And when I say country I mean our family and those we love. In a very mediocre but pretty cool film, "The Core" one man's outlook on saving the world came down to saving just three...his wife and kids. If we all started our actions with thoughts of our families when making the decisions we make everyday from grocery shopping to pulling the lever at the voting polls, perhaps we would be able to live without the stress that we all live with; the burdens that age us a little more each day. You see whether Ronnie was the bubbly, absent-minded former-actor-turned-politician some of us remember or the borderline tyrannical member in a super secret inner government that others remember.... he loved his family and he served them well. That is who we should all aspire to be.
We all have our opinions of what right and wrong are. The truth is everyone's right and everyone's wrong. My uncle, Zach, is in Iraq right now and I'm counting the days for his return because I miss him dearly. But we both knew we had a duty to serve, not a country or a flag but to serve our family. My health did not allow me to fight as a Marine, nor did it allow me to play in the NFL. He on the other hand has had a very gallant career in the Army and I couldn't be more proud. Whether he's over there because terrorists are impugning on our inalienable rights or because some guy from Texas has a chip on his shoulder doesn't matter. He's not representing the rest of you.... he’s representing our family and I pray for him and all the men and women like him.
Ronald Reagan was 93 years old when he passed. He served his country. He served his flag and I'm pretty sure he served his God. He also served his family and it's for that reason I salute him.
Nico brothers and sisters...pray for your families.
