I have one more question does anyone know how much transmission fluid the 2001 pathfinder LE takes. I think I read 9 qts does that sound right? Its the automatic, 3.5L.

Check out the Member Recommended Fluids and Filters thread. I use Royal Purple Max ATF. Last time I used almost 9qts which was what I drained but I think it was overfilled by the person that serviced it last. I'd buy 9qts and only replace what you drain and return what's left over, or keep it for the next change.

the total capacity is close to 9qts, but you can not drain all of it unless you drop the transmission and pour it out of the torque converter. if you're just draining the pan, you'll only need about 6qts. i don't recommend "putting in what you took out." fill it until you get within the marks on the dipstick. go for a drive around the block and check it again.

Actually when I check transmission fluid with dipstick, I am not able to say what is exact fluid level. Stick comes out having oil with almost like 3 inches from end. I know that is not true as I just drained fluid which was around 5-6qt and I added 5qt back. When I say having oil with 3 inches from end, it is oil marks but oil thick layer is there only on the tip of end.

How you guys tell by looking at dipstick what is the correct level of fluid? is there any trick or something.

Motor oil dipstick tells exactly how much oil is there.

This is exactly why I put in what I drained. When I dropped the plug for the pan I got almost 9qts, not the 6 that Alex is claiming. I suspect it was over filled but not by 3 quarts.

If we rely on only what is drained, we are assuming previous fluid level was correct, It might be previously it was overfilled or below minimum.

When I did drain last week, I am sure fluid came out was around 5-6 qt since I used milk container to store fluid and it was around 1 and half milk container. This is for 2003 Pathy SE. I bought it used around 6-7 months back and thought of changing fluid. But not sure previously fluid level was correct or not.

Why not add just a bit less than what you drained. Check level. Add if needed. It has a dipstick for a reason. Amsoil has the total fill of the 3.5 and the 3.3 at 9qt. I thought alex had this figured out on the 6th reply.

"Check Level" is the step, I am finding difficulty with.. I am not sure how to read dipstick. Its having fluid all over it.

try again until you find a way that you are able to read it.... there is no real trick for this... it's not like it's going to be clear like black and white... you will have to figure out what is the oil that is from the trans level and which one is just splashed on the stick..

If it can help, also, try reading it when the engine is stopped. Once you stop it, clean the stick and put it back in and wait 10 minutes. if you remove it slowly, you should see a clear separation between the red of the oil and the silver of the stick.. also since the engine is not running, there should be less splashed oil on it.

are you wiping the dipstick before you read it? make sure you wipe off all oil from the dipstick, then put it back in, all the way down, then pull it out again.

Well one thing that sucks on our cars, is that you have to fill the fliuid through the same whole that you check the fluid with

Once you put oil in and get the inside of that check tube coverred in oil, its gonna be oily and give false marking for a while
Wish there was a better way to fill

most vehicles refill fluid through the transmission dip stick. on many FWD transaxles, there is not even a dipstick. you have to reach down to the case and remove the fill plug, and use your finger to check the fluid. and when you refill it, you're left to your own devices on how to get the fluid down there without spilling.

we're very lucky to have a trans dipstick tube and a drain plug on the pan.

the way i do is this:
replace every 2 years 5 liter oil from oil pan.cause can reach the rest of oil on the back.REMEMBER HOW MUCH YOU DRAIN THAT MUCH PUT BACK IN.
over 10 years using Syntetic MOBILE 1 ATF fluid in my old pathfinder and now countinue tradition with qx4 .never had eny problems.
pathfinder sold at 360000 still running good with new owner close to 400 000 km ,and qx4 pushing 260 000 km using only this oil ,not any additives or any other chemicals.
also i have put on the bottom of the oil pan 3 o-ring magnets just in case if it any metal particales in trany to holdem down.

good luck
