i'm pretty sure that's how the original poster intended it, but that doesn't make it correct.

techno is 4/4 music (repetitive beat, like house or trance) and generally consists of 60% percussion and 40% wierd tweaky sounds.

if you wanna hear techno (a genre that doesn't include crystal method- that's acid breakbeat- or fatboy slim, who makes big beat), get on soulseek and download a mix by richie hawtin, adam beyer, or jeff mills.

Lautsprecher - Omnibus is like 4 years old and it sure aint techno, its progressive club.

Well, if you have your little finger on the pulse of what "techno" really is, perhaps you could have recommended some tracks, instead of arguing about the classification ad nauseum. For god's sake, people, the guy asked for MUSIC, not a running debate about what "techno" is. No offense.

What separates techno from trance from drum & bass and so on is what kind of equipment the producer used to make it with. I you use a Nor Nordlead synth along with a Roland 808 or a jv1010 you’re going to have a techno song. If you decide to use a Korg triton along with a Kurtswell k2500 synth you’re going to have a more modern sounding song. It also depends on how you lay down your beats the “bass” and last but not lest the software that you use…….

gah.. there is a big diffrence.. house is more upbeat and most of the time mixed songs with words in it (no all the time but somtimes..) trance is chill and slow moving.. techno is more spratic(sp?) (and for me) not as pleasing to lison to.. but thats just me.. then u have jungle, drum and bass and so on.. but ur all right, its all about the same.. just diffrent styles.. just like someone could say "ska is punk" when ska is nothing like punk, but it sorta is in a way..

OK - So is a band like Kraftwerk considered Techno?

Sorry - I'm old. I had a tape of theirs back in the late 80's and it sounded just like what _dk described ....

Hmmm, this one is kind of hard. Since my brother spins DnB alot of my favorite stuff is just individual tracks. But as for whole CD's I deffinatly recomend anything by Craze. I've seen him twice and he is completely mind blowing. I know one of the guys who put on one of the Craze shows and has it recorded on DVD. At one point he was throwing more then a record a minute. (Which for those of you who don't know much about matching beats/spinning records, is extremely hard and mind blowing to see it in person.) Also the "Renegade Continum Vol.2" by Dara is pretty sweet, first DnB CD I ever got. Hmmm J.Majik is pretty awesome, but I don't know the name of the CD of his I have. And last but not least can't forget Roni Size. I have one CD of his that has alot of guest MC's. Such as the old lead singer from Rage Against The Machine, and Method Man. And if you wanna go classic, pick up something by LTJ Bukem. Ok last one i promise, list of people I've seen live just for kicks.LTJ Bukem, AK1200, Dara, Planet Of The Drums (Dara, AK1200, and Diesel Boy,) Craze and Infamous (from the Allies) Aphroditie, Jekel & Hyde, and Deibc. Hope this helps.Ryan

ok-

http://djsets.hyperreal.org/

ya see how some sets are classified "house" and some "drum'n'bass" and some "trance" and some "techno"? seems to me they wouldn't use that as a descriptor if it is as general as you think.

& azhitman- kraftwerk is the original techno. they pretty much did it first.

_dk -- Perhaps you are right.. But i for one have never heard 'Techno' used that way before. I have been listening to.. well.. "electronic" music for a long time now, and I have no idea what techno sounds like.. At least the clubers around here DC, BALTO, HARRISBURG, dont use the word that way. I appologize.

check the dj's i mentioned in my first post, or here- http://420.am/echo/ is a list of sets recorded at a friend-of-a-friend's club in sf. the 5/3, 5/10, and all of the june sets are a good sample of techno as we get it here in the sf bay area.

Yes bring this thread back to life i was gonna ask the same question but since i am a good user i chose to use the search button since this thread answered no ones question and it was more of an argument i am gonna start it up againi will make my question a bit more specifici am looking for techno, or whatever you wanna call it, but i want fast beats the best examples i can give are similar to initial d tracks but without gay singing in them -Asian Rave (Techno Mix)-is another good example so yes fast beats with a lot of whacked out sounds thats what i am looking for so if someone could point me in the general direction of that, that would be great

peace

Gay singing? How dare you disparage Japanese pop. ;)
