Yes, I do believe the SMIC is better than a FMIC. :rolleyesI think I've heard about MKIVTT sidemounts being used. Or maybe a DSM.

He was joking man...No way a sidemount is better than a frontmount, unless there is a leak in the sidemount...

If you wanna go sidemount for now then get the stock sidemount with pipings. You usually find them for about $150-250.

If you have the money though just go for a fmic.

old supra sidemount fits with a sledge hammer. garage kwai out here has cone a couple of them, they sell the old supra intercoolers for like 100 bucks, piping only has to be slightly modifed, and i think with that side mount you could boost 12-14 without loosing efficency.

go ahead and put the huge front mount intercooler on and get your ****ty turbo lag, and crappy throttle response. The sidemount intercooler is good for a fairly stock motor. Just remember if you over size your intercooler your turbo will not be able to keep up.

And are you going to say that a 2" exaust is better for a "lesser modifided turbo" than a 3 inch? :rolleyes

Why wouldn't the turbo be able to keep up? Once the intercooler and piping of a turbo system is filled up, the turbo should have no problems putting out the same airflow. In fact, depending on which dimensions are made bigger, the I/C may actually offer less of a pressure drop and allow the turbo to boost less to make the same manifold pressure. This would equate to better overall efficiency as well, since the air coming from the turbo will be a little cooler.

As far as lag, how much bigger are we talking here? Keep in mind that flow has nothing to do with the overall size of the I/C itself. It's the cross-sectional area of each channel, times how many channels it has that makes the biggest impact. And even if you add a few more channels to an intercooler. Do you really think there is that much volume to deal with? Adding a few feet of piping would probably be more than the volume from adding a reasonably sized FMIC. And adding a few feet would have only a slight effect on response. Throttle response does not change from any of this since it is only the measurement to how the engine responds to throttle inputs. I think Boost response is the word you are looking for. And there should be little to no noticable change in response either.

I'd look more at the cost-benefit of blocking some of the airflow to the radiator and increasing the temperature of the air that flows through it, and the performance gain from the added airflow obtained from using a FMIC. If I could get the same efficiency and flow from a sidemount as I could a front mount, then I would go with the sidemount to avoid blocking the radiator. But in most cars a sidemount tends to have much less airflow and is limited in size.

I say don't get an aftermarket downpipe if you're planning to go with a custom aftermarket turbo setup in the near future. Why waste money when you can just use a stock dp($20-50) and save up for the aftermarket turbo setup since I'm sure it'll need a custom downpipe made anyway.

The thing is that you can get an Apex GT Spec for about 460 bucks. More than 100 bucks cheaper than the Blitz Nur Spec R. The Blitz is only 3". The GT Spec is 3.74".

in my opinion a fmic on the stock t25 sucks, i know coming from dsm's that NOBODY puts a fmic with the t-too small, the turbo is too small and the pressure drop is huge, tha's why i don't understand why everyone that does the swap starts out with a fmic, i bet it owuld run better at the stock level with a smic, i know i put 225 to the wheels on my eclipse in the t-25 and stock ic, and got up to 265 whp with a larger turbo and the stock smic, i don't know how good/crappy the stock sr intercooler is but i know the 2g eclipse one is pretty small, and if you want a dsm sidemount try http://www.dsmtrader.com or http://www.thepartstrader.com

well the stock SMIC on sr20's are small and do not do a good job cooling, and a FMIC has about just as much piping length as Side mount and you can just get a medium sized core.

Arn't DSM's AWD with Longetude mounted engine?

My bad its $469 not shipped (I believe but I could be wrong) from http://www.sr20detperformance.com or phase 2 motorsports. But keep in mind thats for a S14. S13 GT Spec's cost more.

well the "reason" they do is because people arent 'usually' staying stock....most motors DO NOT include a SMIC, and cost about 300 additional...so 300 for a stock ic which isnt that great, or an extra 500 for a much much much better IC...the other thing is the sr motor is strong, and can run a lot of boost, and a good amount of HP...the stock ic only lets you realize about 10psi of that power, the big fmic's allow you to run as much as the t2small can put out....we can run the turbo's with the wastegate stuck closed, and boost max t2small pressure with a large ic and not worry about detonation with a good setup, dsm guys sometimes cringe at thoughts like that...especially with a stock ic...figure if your running the side mount at 10psi, and you can run the front mount at over 14psi, your getting over 40 more hp out of the car...its usually considered a 'worthy' investement....

the stock ic is pretty shatty

ps are those dyno numbers your posting? are assumptions? i'd be interested in seeing those stock dsm's dyno sheets if you wouldnt mind posting them up. thanks.

i dyno'd 200 whp on the t25, 225 was pretty much the top you could get out of it, it has been awhile since i thought about it, so i'm sorry, and after the turbo upgrade it dyno'd 245 with stock dp and cat and many other things at 18psi so my moderte guess is that with downpipe open dump afc test pipe and more boost it should have been close to that i don't have a scanner but i dyno'd like 200.4 at 14psi with intake exhaust and boost controller
