can anyone recommend a good Q tech.? the "infiniti guru" that did the work on my sluggish Q came highly recommended and had no complaints filed with the BBB. The work is still under warranty but he has had the car at least 5 months out of the last 11 with the repeated trips back.

Wow... a drive to Atlanta would take a day from there? I think I'd go that route. T3 in Atlanta is probably the nation's best independent for Infiniti. I call it the Q mecca.

What's wrong with your Q?

Not meaning to discourage business but dealerships are only maybe $20-$25-$30 per hour more expensive than independents.......assuming they will do chain guides vs complete chain changes, etc., assuming they will work with you to bundle work - costs, etc.Unless you need a few thousand worth of work doesn't pay to drive long distances for services.

Our distant customers from Minnesota, Michigan, Maine, New Jersey, New York all spent at least $2,500 each and up to $6,500 for lots of work.........one single trips.

5 months [110 days] out of 11 months? Assuming he only spent 25% of his time that would be $35,000.

Never seen a Q that had to have more than 5-6 days per year on site. You can replace the engine in 2.5-3.5 days.

Each day should result in $1500-$2,000 worth of work [your bill].

Somebody is inefficient!

"inefficient" is an understatement. the original bill was about $2300, which included head gasket, chains and guides, tons of hoses and valve job. return visits put it up to over $3000. some injectors ,ect.. and my civic will outrun it! i see all these complete engines on ebay but is it me or do they all have 40,000 miles on them?.

Japan has laws which require a complete overhaul at 60,000/6 years miles to promote the sale of new cars! But the average driver in Japan only does 7,000 miles per year. They take the trains, buses, and taxis because the tools and gas is so expensive not to mention the traffic! Now the Q [Presidents] are ultra lux excecutive cars usually driven by the body guard or lower members of the Royal Family or government execs. They may idle a lot.

All youi can safely say is these engines don't have 100,000 miles on them........simple examination [look in oil filler port] and [pull a valve cover and look at cams]. Look at valve cover leaks and front and rear main seals.

The Japanese takeouts are distinctive in that they have non US exhaust no precats...........but many [1989-1993] and [94-95] versions are in US now and they get picked over by knowlegable people who know what to look for in buying used engines.

We reject many engines and they send substitutes. These still have to have chain guides, valve cover reseals, new plugs, water pump and hoses. We reject all those which need knock sensors.Still the R&R costs $1500 sitting on an engine stand.

The problem with ebay is you can't examine the engine before its shipped..........We have local suppliers who will deliver to our shop for $1500 or we can go view 4-5 and prepick the one we want.

But when you are not near a major city you have few choices.

We change engines all the time but expect $5,500 for a good job and you still have issues with injectors since they are not changed as that would add $1500. They don't fail with Japanese or Southern gasoline.

So you had a timing chain guide failure? Who did the work? A dealership or independent?
