I finally tinted my windows today, and before I left for the shop this morning, I thought I would check on the progress of a bill allowing front side window tints. The current law in Illinois is NO tint on side windows adjacent to the driver (or, of course, the windshield).
Our new proposed law will allow tints on the side windows. It is more complicated than it needs to be, but it breaks down to:
35% VLT allowed on side windows if rear window is no less than 35% VLT, otherwise 50% VLT is allowed. I don't know why they couldn't just pick a number!
This has passed both our house and senate, and went to Gov. Quinn today. He has 60 days to sign or veto it. A veto can be overruled by a 2/3 majority vote in both houses. From what I could find, the bill was approved unanimously, so I don't see why it won't become law. We could have legal tints by the end of summer!
Here's a link to the status of the bill. It's hard to read the legal wording, so I may have the details screwed up. I studied engineering, not law!
