Hey all,

Any good recommendations for quality GL4 Gear oil for my 88 pickup? I'm pretty sure the oil in there is original, although it does still look clean. Also, 80w90 or 75w90? Thanks!

I ended up buying Nissan MTF. If I remember correctly, there's an additive in most of the modern gear oil that doesn't agree with the Nissan transmissions. I can't remember for sure though.

Just my preference In the transmission I use a fully synchromesh M.T.F. Given your location I would consider changing the rear differential oil. Being that I live in Minnesota my preference is 75/ 90 fully synchronized GL5. ‘

I don’t usually post here, but was skimming and saw this thread/post about using GL-5, so felt obligated to post this haha.

GL-5 will destroy the manual transmission in a hardbody. You have to use GL-4 per the thread below, although you can use GL-5 in your rear diff.

Apparently everyone who uses Redline MT-90 swears it’s worth every penny of the cost, and they shift better than ever before with no noise, so that would be the brand most recommend.

Page 8 of the manual had recommended fluids.

I went with redline mt90. Yes, it's ridiculously expensive, but probably won't change it for another 35years since its not a daily. I would say it shifts a little smoother when cold. Don't notice anything different once warmed up. Pretty sure I changed out the original fluid from the factory with about 70k miles on it.

"What you have to do if you want to really get rid of those problems is change the MANUAL TRANSMISSION FLUID to a synthetic one. Wait until you get to around 4500 miles or when you are sure that the production of break-in wear metals is finished. Then, when you put in the new MTF mix in, it won't be further contaminated with any more break-in metals.

I STRONGLY suggest using REDLINE's product for our trannies. It makes the shifting BUTTER SMOOTH.

You should use a mixture of 60% MTL /40% ML-90 manual transmission fluid to have the right viscosity. I found out that this ratio is the best one for me.

That is pretty much the best stuff you're going to get for our tranny. It seems to provide the best shifts out of all other fluids I've tried."

I did this on the 04 Xterra with manual, and it shifts beautifully.
