Good Exhaust Size for SOHC?

So long story short i bought my 89 hatch and it came with no exhaust. Picked up a manifold and 2-1 pipe for 26 bucks. Since i'm pretty much just gonna make my own exhaust, what's a good size that's not too much? 2" is stock i believe, so i was thinking a little bigger, maybe 2.5". I don't wanna buy exhaust cuz i don't wanna invest more than i have to into the sohc. Winter comes i'm swapping everything over to my stiffened chassis, except a built motor. So this is a cheap and easy project. Any suggestions?

just stick with the 2.5 it will gain some power but not be too loud. if you are sticking with the sohc and plan on turboing it go 3

Even if you go turbo, 2.5 will hold you up to a certain point.

3 inch is ok on an N/A motor too, but if you don't have supporting mods, like header/test pipe/cams, you'll notice a drop in low end torque. But if you have these mods... man, it feels nice & perky.

Edit: Nevermind the 3 inch! You said Sohc... stick with 2.5.

Yea like i said, i'm not investing a whole lot into this motor. Building up my VG30dett for my stiffened hatch Just gonna drive this til winter comes along(wisconsin), then doing the swap. So i figured why not build an exhaust from scratch? So 2.5" is the winner then?

yea i have a straight 3inch hks exhaust with a nismo test pipe on my sohc lol dont ask, just was on the car when i bought it lol

i use to have 3in and it was too f***ing loud noticed a power loss, put a 2.5in one it felt a lot better.
