I still look through the listings for M45's to see what kind of deals are out there. This one struck me as being pretty darn good for the miles and equipment. This would be an especially good deal if they were willing to deal a little from their advertised price.

Seems like a good deal but no tellin what the cars paint condition is in, or if it has been in a mild to bad accident. I have found that the really good deals ARE too good to be true. That was my experience when I was hunting mine down.

Well, the ad says no issues or accidents. I think that I got a steal on mine and I think that if a person hunts long enough or deals hard enough they will eventually come out with something nice.

I would not say you are an idiot. That is a bit harsh. Although I have found AutoCheck to be better than CarFax. If you are serious about buying a good pre-inspection by a qualified tech is a sound investmest.

I almost bought this car almost 2 months ago. He paid 21500 if i remember correctly at the auction (Manheim, I belive). They have had it for a while, and will be willing to deal on it. I checked records with Infiniti, and it had all the services done on time. Should be a good car.

With a clean record and all the services done on time that would really be a nice car for $23,000. Especially considering the mileage.
How did you find out what the car went for at auction? That is great information to get.
On a side note, how would you like to be the guy that paid in the neighborhood of $50,000-$60,000 for an M45 only to come back to the dealer two years and 20,000 miles later and find out that your car has taken a $30,000 to $40,000 hit in it's value. Ouch!

A family member owns a dealership and subscribes to Manheim and ADESA auction houses. Those are two main nationwide used car auctioneers, that are used by most manufacturer's to unload their lease returns, trade-ins, and corporate cars. You can search by VIN to find sale records (up to 30 days) on their websites if you are a member and have a login. Any registered auto dealer can bid either in person, or online. They also offer 'buy-it-now' option on some cars. In addition to that, there are blocks of cars that are typically reserved for official 'new make' dealers, for example Infiniti dealers only auctions. That ensures that only Infiniti dealers will bid on those cars, and that there are no other dealers inflating the wholesale value - allowing Infiniti dealers to make more money on those cars, and have less competing same model cars out in the market at independent dealers. You can also get a market report that will provide general figures on what a particular car typically sells for at auction.
You feel sorry for the guy that paid $50-60k for an M45, but it really does not work that way. Most people who purchase those cars will keep them for a long time. The cars that you see on the market are typically lease returns. They are owned by Nissan Financial, and are being sold at auction by Nissan. The owner only pays what he agreed to for leasing/using the car for the duration of his contract. You know what the cost will be up front (i.e. $750/month x # of months + fees). The amount the car sells for is Nissan's gamble. That is the reason why BMW lost tons of money last year - their residuals on lease returns dropped way lower than what they expected at lease origination.
Ultimately, if you can't afford losing big $ on a car, do not purchase expensive automobiles - after all, they are depreciating assets - unless the expense is tax deductible, or you are being reimbursed by your employer.
