i have a 90 ka24e that i drive daily. the engine in the car was replaced with a lower miles engine and i have since put about 25k on it. so id guess around 100k or so are on the engine. when i bought the car it would lose a quart about every 3k miles and now it seems to be losing a quart every 2k and sometimes 1k. i compression checked it and got 160 across the board. i did the clutch about 3 mo ago and i inspected the rear main seal which looked excellent and i have no loss of oil under the car or around the vlavle cover or oil cap. i put in some flourecent dye yesterdaya but i need to put some miles on it before i notice a leak. any ideas of what could cause a loss like this. i use mobil 1 fully synthetic and im really debating going back to dino if it keeps going the way it is.thanksluigi

Try checking the areas around your front oil seal, timing cover and oil pan.

Your valve stem seals may also be worn. Does the car blow smoke?

first, i don't know if this is true but i heard from a guy who works for mobil that you shouldn't use synthetic if you didnt start using it before 65k. normal oil builds up carbon deposits-keeps any leaks blocked. synthetic washes these away. also, oil rings do not have anything to do with compression, they merely keep excess oil from ending up in the cylinder. the valves could have oil leaking around them so you may have to replace the valve seals. the dye will not show leakage from any of the above places.-hope this helps

Agreed...if it's not leaking oil, then it's burning it. Valve stem seals are the more likely culprit. They are a bit of a pain to replace, but can be done with the engine in the car with the right tools. Easier to replace than the oil rings.

well it does not blow one tiny bit of smoke, and i have had valve seals that cause a quart every 3k problem on my eclipse and every morning i looked like james bond with my smoke screen. i know the dye will not show anything internal but if it proves to be internal im just going to drive it till the engine goes then drop in a new one. as for the synthetic info 240kid gave, that is not true of current synthetics and not mobil 1. mobil now suggests not switching to synthetic until after 75k because they have seal expanding properties. but i dont really want to get into any of that now.and as far as oil rings go, i thought they were under the compression ring. anyone know if i can show good compression but lose oil through my rings?luigi

do another compression check. pour oil in each cylinders and do the check again. if the numbers go up, then your rings are bad. if they stay the same, then your valve seals could be shot.

the oil thing is for bad compression. he has good compression, just probobly burning oil. if the oil rings are worn, they do not wipe away excess oil from the sleeve and it makes it's way into the combustion chamber. once again, can hapen with perfectly good piston rings. so, putting oil in the piston will not detect anything. also, turboweege, open the hood and open and close the throttle manually and see if blueish smoke is coming out of the exhaust pipe. if there is, your burning oil.-hope this helps thingsmichael

well, like i said it doesnt blow any smoke at all. i have had people follow me and ive gone to the track like 10 times this past summer/fall and taped it and there isnt even any smoke at wot at redline. i guess ill just see if i can see any leakage with the dye and if not ill just have to switch back to dino oil and deal with the leakage. i basically assumed from the get go that the rings were possibly leaking but i figured the compression check would reflect this.luigi

the oil is going somewhere. if i were you, i would not rest untill i found it. clean your engine w/carb cleaner so you can see any new leaks. make sure you keep changing your oil filter at 3k so it doesnt gum up. i know a guy who was burning oil and didnt change the filter because he felt the new oil he kept putting in wasn't geting dirty. WRONG!!! blew his engine beyond repair.good luck finding the leak, dont give up!

well, i dont change my oil every 3k but i would never just keep adding oil. i change anaywhere between 6-9k miles withh mobil1 synthetic and mobil 1 filter. been doing this for about 60k miles and it still comes out where i can look through it. i promise its not leaking on the outside. my engine is clean and i added dye and cant see any anywhere around the engine. and this stuff glows under a black light bright. how can i find where its leaking internally if it comp checks find. in the ast ive added oil etc to locate the cause but my car was usually smoking at that point. this car doesnt smoke or show external leakge signs. ill keep hunting but im getting a spare engine and transmission from my friend in case it does go.thanksluigi
