I have a local guy to weld up a basic 3" exhaust from the turbo back. I don't want it to be too loud and I'd like to have just a pipe sticking out of the rear. No can muffler.

I'm thinking, resonator in place of cat and just pipe to the rear - perhaps a hidden muffler if necessary.

How will this sound with just a resonator? What is a good one?

Not sure how this will help, but I'll post my exhaust experience, since going F/I.

When I began, I had stock exhaust...very quiet...very slow. BOOOO little tiny stock exhaust...Hoooray! Beer!

I later went to 2.5" exhaust from the turbo back. I had a straight pipe with just a dual chamber Flowmaster on the end.

It was LOUD. The in-car resonance was pretty harsh.

I then had a glasspack installed where the cat used to be, to serve as a resonator. It really helped a ton with the in-car resonance.

After upgrading to a larger turbo, I installed a 3" downpipe, followed by a 3" Apex'i N1 catback, which consists of a can-style muffler and a square, flow-thru resonator. This full 3" exhaust, still utilizing the glasspack resonator in place of the cat, is EXTREMELY quiet, but still provides a very good flow increase. After installing this sytem, I noticed a drop in boost threshold, and the pull became much more steady throughout the rpm band.

So, in short, do yourself a favor and install both a flow-thru muffler-style (square) resonator in place of the stock resonator, along with maybe a glasspack in place of the cat. Then it might not be too bad.

Why didn't you use the resonator that came with the exhaust?

So, you say resonator + a good hi flow muffler tucked up underneath?

I think a single 3" pipe sticking out the back will look like all business.

Sorry for being unclear...

The 2.5" exhaust was all custom...nothing came with it except for parts I said "please put on here" and all.

The 3" exhaust came with the can-style muffler and the resonator (square muffler lookin' thing in front of the rear axle, but flows straight through). I added the glasspack in place of the cat.
