Hi, I have my 94 Q45, & it's running great, so I took it on a test drive. I went to a isolated road and floored it, I held it to the floor. The tach went up to 7000 rpm (redline) and past, the engine started to make a sqeel, so I let my foot off the gas.(My Q. is) Is their a rev limiter OEM stock that protects from over rev? Or is their no factory protection against over rev and can cause possible engine damage?

Also what does the shift lock button does?, it's pushed in, and will not pop up.

Thanks for any help.Infiniti's are great!

Yes, that's the rev limiter you hit.

The Shift Lock button lets you move the shifter without your foot on the brake. Or pushing down the button on top of the shifter. Or something. My Q isn't here, or else I'd go look. :-(

So it will not damage the engine, by going past the redline? Supposing the rev limiter is worknig properly.

I have rode the rev limiter a couple of times and don't have any problems on my car with 160,000. I did it only once on purpose at the 1/4 track to beat a Mustang...the other 3~4 times were from street races where I was concentrating on everything else except the redline. I could hear that the engine was not reving any higher and so I looked down only to see the rpms burried at 7,300rpm for a full 1 second count....Yeeouch!!! But no harm done thus far. I have the JWT and now Robert's/NICO chip which allow 7,300rpm redline. If you car is maintained...you will have no problems.

also don't be surprised if you are doing a long high speed run with the gas pedal floored...say 80mph to 140mph....the AC will shut off. Air will still blow out but it will not be cool. Something about an over reving safety feature on the compressor being run at those speeds for a long time.

Your "squeal" is likely an idler pulley going bad, or a glazed belt. I had that noise on Q1 until I changed the pullies.

the "squeal" is "almost definitely" an idler pulley that is going bad. same with my 90Q. near redline mine would squeal too (between 6000-7000 rpm only). changed all the belts and the squeal remained. PULLEYS!!!

If it's like every other car, the shift lock button just bypasses the shifter lockout. That way you can put it in neutral if you're broken down, and still shift if the button on top of the shifter is busted (which I guess is common on Q45s, coincidentally...)

Idler pullys gone bad, that is exactly what it sounded like! I knew it couldnt be a rev limiter making that noise, the SQUEL. Or it could be the belts, because I dont know how old they are. I will look at new belts and posibly an idler pully.

I do not know for certain how Nissan set the red-line' limit on the Q45. It may be accessory speed limited or may be a real engine constraint (valve spring harmonics ??).

I do know that on MBZ it is set by accessory speed limits or cooling capacity. "The vehicle shall be able to run at wide open throttle in highest gear (or at rpm limiter max ) indefinitely in Standard Conditions (atmos temp, altitude, humidity ) without exceeding service limits of any feature. "

This DIN standard ensures all the components of the drive train will not fail on the autobahn. With today's powerplants, it often means TIRES are the limiting components on the MBZ.

I doubt if the Q45a is similarly designed for adequate cooling of rear axle, transmission, PS, engine oil, etc. for WOT max speed running 'indefinitely'. I KNOW the usual tires on our cars will not survive very long (at all?) at the top speed of the Q45.

Ya, Im going to get new belts and idler pullys.I am finding out that I will be spending a lot of money on this car just maintaining it, I may sell it. And I dont think the stock tires can surrvive max speed of a Q45, just need better tires.

You don't need idler pullies, you just need three 6301 UZ bearings and a friend with a hydraulic press.
