HDR imaging. Search wiki on that topic. It's a passing trend in popular photography. Originally a trick used by pros to compensate for less than idea lighting. Not a fan of HDR when applied with a heavy hand. The way it should be applied is when you can't tell it's been done (like the image looks natural, not heavily processed).
