Hi guys...I own a 1985 720 with a Z24, double coils, double plugs, etc. ...(I'm sure you're familiar with it)...early this past summer the IC unit in the distributor started acting up until it finally quit...it would start after several tries and, once it warmed up, it would start at the first try...it would try to die while running and backfires were the result (that's why I parked it)....work compromises definitely kept me away from getting it back on the road, until about a week ago... the timing chain and sprockets got replaced as did the water pump... got the new IC installed and tried to start it up, no way...no spark from the coils...did all the tests the Haynes manual describes for the coils, IC unit and peripherals, but it points back to the IC...got it replaced once more, still no spark...repaired the distributor (broken magnets under stator, play on the shaft) and will be putting it back together tomorrow...what if it still won't start? where should I look? What should I look for? Somebody mentioned a signal coming out of the ECM but I have no idea what to look for... anybody have any ideas? Immensly appreciated...

The distributors on the carbureted z24 motors are (were) known for failure as opposed to the z24i units, which are more reliable. I think you may need to replace the whole unit, because if I remember correctly, they can't be rebuilt. I don't think a z24i unit will work on your carbureted engine either, something is different about them.

Hey seang...I did repair the distributor (broken bearing that caused the play in the shaft), but the ECM has no mode selector to turn either clockwise or otherwise so I do not know how I'm to read the dang thing! The "new" distributor I got has to be from an earlier model since it does have the vacuum advance feature the Z24i and later models lack...by the way, just got it all together and STILL no spark...

Honestly, I don't know what to look at beyond this point.

Hey...By some "FM", and after some more tinkering, I finally got spark out of the coils! No idea as to why I got it now...had to disassemble the whole thing again "cause I had some backfiring at the carb...out of timing...broke a spark plug....messed up the radiator trying to get it out..s**t, if it wasn't for bad luck, I wouldn't have any!!!!
