My 240 was in need of new brake pads on the rear passenger side. It's sensor was screaming due to the wear on the pad. So I got a new set, and my friend an I went to work. When we got the brake off of the rotor I noticed that the inner pad was worn at an angle not evenly. I saw this as not normal but kinda disregarded it at the time. We had some issues getting it back together mainly with getting the piston pushed in enough to make space for the new pads. After all was said and done we had it back together. I drove home that evening and when I was at a stop light some dude started shouting at me saying my brake was burning. I pulled over next chance I had and checked it out and noticed that it was so hot from the friction my rotor was glowing bright red. This is obviously an issue. Does anyone have any insight on the problem, what exactly could be wrong. I have very little mechanical knowledge but my friend doing most of the work has good knowledge of working on all sorts of vehicles. At this time we are kind of at a loss on what we actually did wrong. Any thoughts?

i'm thinking you didn't get the piston all the way in. i assume you know you have to rotate the piston back in, not just force it back.

did you line up the notch on the piston with the bump on the pad? that may be why it was angled before.

one time i waited so long to replace my rear pads that the piston in the caliper had pushed itself all the way out and i needed to replace the calipers as well. tho i would guess something like this would be noticeable to someone who is familiar with brakes.

I think we got it, I pretty sure you're right about the piston not being in far enough. I went to advance auto and actually got the correct tool for it and pushed it in almost flush with the rubber seal. We put in back on and it had much better play between it and the rotor. Before it was pretty tight, but we both thought the it would adjust as it was driven. Seems to be working fine now. Thanks

it only adjusts out, not in.

im guessing your forgot to lube the sliding pins...they probably seized on one side and stayed applyed. the pins are what the caliper bolts bolt into. You can pull that rubber off its seat on the caliper and slide the pin out, get brake caliper pin lube and smear it on the pin then put it back together. I had this happen to me once, I was driving down the freeway and started smelling brakes, got off and pulled over and could see smoke in my side view mirror...Its good to remeber to re-lube the those pins.
