Well, I think something could be up with an emissions system. EGR comes to mind. Sure it injects hot air into the intake, but that actually cools down the engine operating temps. Your engine is running hot it seems. So maybe EGR isn't working properly. Could be thermal protection causing the engine to die out. There are temp sensors that the computer uses for operation. One sensor goes to your temp gauge and the other sensor goes to the ECU. That could be an issue. Your MAF, TPS and O2 sensors will affect the AFR and that can have the engine run lean which would be hot.
You have a '97. I suggest getting an OBD-II scanner on there and checking for codes. I don't think you should push the truck too much. You could end up making something worse. Baby it until it's fixed.
