Here is a link for the actual report, you can get it in english or spanish: http://www.globalcommissionondrugs.org/Report

One excerpt from the report:
Political leaders and public figures should have the courage to articulate publicly what many of them acknowledge privately: that the evidence overwhelmingly demonstrates that repressive strategies will not solve the drug problem, and that the war on drugs has not, and cannot, be won.
I've been saying it for a while now, the war on drugs is futile. Discuss?

LOL thats because when I posted the first I didnt intend to go into the drug war aspect. My support for drug testing welfare recipients lies solely on the fact that working people are drug tested. If we were to end the war on drugs, decriminalize them (at least the more docile ones) and go more for the treatment angle, there would be no need for drug testing welfare recipients, and the only need for testing workers would be to ensure they weren't using during working hours.

This might belong in the other thread, but what the heck:

People on welfare are receiving a government service, available to all on the basis of need. Employees are parties to a contract. There's the difference. Don't confuse the two.

Understood. Still, couldnt the drug test results be a part of need determination?

Legalize some drugs. Alcohol and tobacco is responsible for more deaths per year than every illegal drug combined. Tax it, allow policing agencies to spend more time in other places.

End the drug war to end huge amounts of violence. Stop throwing people in jail for personal habits, even if they are self-destructive.

I'm pretty sure we've had a gazillion debates on regarding the drug war, or at least I try to bring it up often. :)

Yes we have, and I just thought it appropriate to post the report so we could maybe discuss it.
