Well when it rains, it pours.

I have an 89 240 - Manual transmission with a bad attitude.

Failed Aircare a couple weeks back (and so performance problem numero uno) and a few days after that the car hiccupped @ about 110Kms/hr. The speedometer died, as did the odometer (needless to say I am feeling guilty that my car is going, but going no where) and it continues to shut down at about 110 now. In hindsight, my speedometer has been slipping (needle goes for a bungee jump) for a long while. Take it, this was a sign.

Saturday, the Starter croaked, had that replaced, asked about having the Speedometer cable checked and was told the car has no cable, it's electronic. What? I'm not sure I understand why they figure it doesn't. Course it does, doesn't it?

Anywho,

This evening car died again; turned the key, aux came on and then lost all power. No click, nothing. A friend and I pushed the car around a bit to line it down a hill and power came back very suddenly. My battery and Alt were tested fine the day I was rescued for the starter.

There must be a ground or glitch somewhere but I don't know where to start. Is any of this related?

I have until mid June to worry about getting my Aircare. I'm desperately trying to wipe the words "sucker" off my forehead and don't want to be taken for a ride by a garage if I go in with this collection of complaints.

Help please!!? Thank you.

electronic speedo. it's at the back of the transmission. can't miss it.

You could have a short on the inside of the key cylinder.

That my speedometer/odometer do not work (which unless I'm an idiot will need to be working to get aircare), that it failed which is a minimum (so they say) $500 to repair to get it through, that my car runs like ****, can't go over 110km without the engine dying on me and that it is currently sitting at the end of my driveway with no power.

I do not know what that means, where it is and what to think about that 180. Did the guys at the garage mess this up when fixing my starter?

so wait a minute, your car starts and runs. when it reaches 110km/h (68mph) it dies.

i think the speedo has nothing to do with it. basically you can run with out a working speedo ie; brokeas240sx on pimp my ride. hahah... also it cant be your starter cause the car obviously runs right until you hit 110km/h.

anymore inputs??? like hard starting, runs/idle rough, etc..

Thank you sleepy.

Discovered my problem re: the "shorting out". Tsk Tsk Won't be heading back to that garage any time soon.

Ahh.. @ 110km (or about 3200rpms) the engine cuts as though there was a rev limiter of some kind ?? Feels like the car is dropping out from under me and I have to get on the gas to start regaining speed. I ask if this is somehow related to the speedo as the first time the car cut out on me the speedometer dropped to 0 and the odometer stopped counting.

Other input. It's failed Aircare and so I do know something is amiss with the emissions system. There is hesitation at all speeds but mostly slight at this point.

ok, when you reach 110km/h you feel a bog/hesitation but the picks up after that?

sounds like a throttle position sensor has a flat spot.
