I got to do Editor for Day this weekend for Car and Driver. It was really a Caddy focus group in disguise. They had Lexus RX350 and the Caddy car-like SUV and they had a BMW 330 ix and the six cylinder caddy that has all wheel drive.

The Lexus was a job, it was a course with one good sweeper and a than some nice shikans. The Lexus was buzzing and beeping the whole time. The Caddy was better. The Caddy sedan would just stop steering if you tried to drift, the BMW was more willing. Overall any car I ever get with those stabiility controls would have to have a way to lock it out, they make driving much less fun.

The event was really fun, if you ever get invited do it.

One reason I will always have an older car. I don't want everything recorded for the last 30 seconds of the vehicle's performance, nor being able to disable the nannies.

These new cars are dummy-proof probably because of all the horsepower. Some of todays drivers are in a rush and get distracted, reaching for their cellphone or lipstick or even a CD and the average person wouldn't know how to handle, for example, a BMW M3 on their own, especially when distracted. The only way to put a car like that in the ditch would be to point it off the road and literally drive off the road. The older cars, even with much less horsepower can catch a driver off guard and the driver can find themself at a loss of control. When I had my 1988 BMW 535is, and was comig out of the car wash with wet tires and trying to get out of the parking lot in a hurry to merge into the traffic, it was easy to end up pointing in the opposite direction if you really push the accelerator, considering it has a 65 to 35 weight distribution. And if I really wanted, I could throw the car in circles at will. In teh snow with the best snow tires it was still a challenge. I do realize that the 535 is a rear wheel dive, but it has much less power compared to todays cars, even if they are 4 wheel drive.

When I had the Lexus is300 back in 2001, the traction control drove me crazy, always acting up. Turn off the traction control and the car had no traction whatsoever. I hated that car in the snow.

I have alwas enjoyed my 80s car more than any, especially when it comes to driving pleasure. I find these new cars isolate you too much.

but really isolation is what people want...

I really liked the VDC on the M45 I drove, it wasnt too bad... It let me slide a little before it kicked in..

Move a foot to mandate VSC systems on all cars and a data log to prove you turned it off or discoed it. So you can be written a ticket for wreckless driving, jailed, and your insurance company can decline payment and coverage in an accident.

Happy times are here again:http://www.usatoday.com/money/...x.htm

We love these kind of systems because they wear the brakes faster and need services often.

There was for sure a range. the Lexus one came on as soon as you were driving aggressvily at all, the Caddy was half-way between while the BMW was kind enough to wait until you were about to slide.

Lexus was just stupid with their warning bells and whatnot. I'l like to see if the GS430 or IS330 does the same thing.

I hate computers. If I have a computer in my car, it'll be a separate PC with no connection to the vehicle itself whatsoever.

There's a 30-step process of tricks and movements to disable ESC/TCS in the Lexus GS. Its like memorizing formulas for a math class.

I heard the Chrysler 300's ESP was almost as annoying as Lexus. I enjoyed it during my test drive, but didn't do anything terribly aggressive.

Besides the computers inside ecu, tcu, abs, hvac all have separate microprocessors.

I would be interested to go out and test drive a GS430 without the sales rep in the car and put it through the flogging that I put that RX350 through on that test track, you cannot even imagine the ringing bells and buzzers that bust lose when throw this car around. At least the Cadillac and the BMW just pulled back, the Lexus was rediculous.
