These new cars are dummy-proof probably because of all the horsepower. Some of todays drivers are in a rush and get distracted, reaching for their cellphone or lipstick or even a CD and the average person wouldn't know how to handle, for example, a BMW M3 on their own, especially when distracted. The only way to put a car like that in the ditch would be to point it off the road and literally drive off the road. The older cars, even with much less horsepower can catch a driver off guard and the driver can find themself at a loss of control. When I had my 1988 BMW 535is, and was comig out of the car wash with wet tires and trying to get out of the parking lot in a hurry to merge into the traffic, it was easy to end up pointing in the opposite direction if you really push the accelerator, considering it has a 65 to 35 weight distribution. And if I really wanted, I could throw the car in circles at will. In teh snow with the best snow tires it was still a challenge. I do realize that the 535 is a rear wheel dive, but it has much less power compared to todays cars, even if they are 4 wheel drive.
When I had the Lexus is300 back in 2001, the traction control drove me crazy, always acting up. Turn off the traction control and the car had no traction whatsoever. I hated that car in the snow.
I have alwas enjoyed my 80s car more than any, especially when it comes to driving pleasure. I find these new cars isolate you too much.
