Ok I know the FSM says to use GL4 but all the parts stores around me only have GL5,and they all told me that I could use GL5 instead of the GL4.I have read though that the GL5 can eat the syncros, but the guys at the parts store told me that was ridiculous.I want to get some feed back from you guys because I really don't want to screw this up,thanks.

I may be wrong, but I thought GL5 was better and the replacement for GL4. Kinda like oil, You can use a higher letter then suggested just not lower.

only use gl-4. gl-5 has certain additives that WILL EAT THE SYNCHROS. gl-5 is not better then gl-4, its just used in different applications.

You may also be able to use synchromesh fluid. Its used in transmission's with bronze (yellow metals) synchros. Not sure about the weight of it though.

Tell the guy at the parts store hes a moron, and check the computer to see that it requires gl-4 fluid.

Guy at the autoparts store kept telling me that as well back in the day. Saying that the fsm was written before gl5 was around, I was like "no it specifies gl5 for the differential" so your a tool. But I had a hard time finding gl4 as well. You can try NAPA as I have brought gl4 from them before and alot of people use Pennzoil Syncromesh since its yellow metal friendly, even though its a lighter weight than what Nissan specifies. I'm running Redline as well right now, the mt-90 is what you need.

You know it's funny that you said NAPA because that's where I was when I was arguing with the guy about hearing that the GL5 would eat the syncros.I also told him that the FSM calls for GL4 and guess what his response was,yep you guessed it "the FSM was written before they came out with GL5"and I also responded with,ya you guessed right again "well then why does it say to use GL5 on the rear diff" so then he tries to say that "oh well they are just trying to say not to use anything less then GL4 for the transmission but GL5 will still work".So thats when I realized this guy was a total douche bag so I left and came home to ask you guys to get the truth, and I'm glad I did.Ya the red line stuff seems to be the way to go,it just sucks that I will have to order it from online,oh well.

I'm running Redline MT-90 and I love it.

From what I've heard, GL-5 is not compatible with GL-4.

Would it be acceptable to use GL-5 in a pinch? Parts store is closed, I'm 300 miles from home and GL-5 is all I've got..

i use the Coastal GL-3, GL-4, GL-5 stuff. GL-5 doesnt "eat" the synchro's, it just has more slip additive, which in turn makes the synchro's slip, and will eventually ruin the synchros. GL-5 isn't hungry, its just slippery :)

Yea, I handn't been using it long when I posted that. Now that I've had it in there for a few years, it's great. The ONLY gear that EVER gives me trouble is 2nd and it's usually me just not giving myself an extra half a second for it to line up. It didn't used to be like that before the Redline.
