I've searched and everyone says to not use GL-5 transmission fluid, but all I can find for sale are GL-5. Even the redline products are GL-5. Where's everyone getting GL-4 transmission fluid?

I ran gl-5 for about a week. Ran out of gl-4 during that time. Anywho, I didn't have any problem with it except I have to wait a little longer for the car to warm up cuz it was a little hard to get into reverse.

I used a lot of different type of gear oil. Redline mt90 is probably best bang for a buck. But I'm using diaqueen. Best thing I ever use.

Yeah I used MT-90. Cost me 10.95 a bottle but well worth it knowing that my transmission's loving it.

mt-90 is GL-4.

briefly running GL-5 won't do any damage. but over time it will eat the brass synchros.

What about Royal Purple 75w90? On the bottle it says something like "GL-4 and GL-5 compatible"...

even though the guy was discussing MR2s, the information is still the same

compared with gl-5, gl-4 is better for synchros, worse for gears and bearings

so now I dont know what to get. I mean, my KA24DE and even the old SR20DET manuals were printed in the early 90s. its 2008; there may be lubricants that will solve the problems associated with going to either gl-4 or gl-5

I'm using diaqueen gl-3. It feels even better than gl-4

From royal purple's web page:

My vehicle's transmission specifies an API GL-4 gear oil. Can I use Max-Gear? Yes. Max-Gear possesses both API GL-5 and GL-4 certification. Max-Gear is formulated with Royal Purple’s proprietary, Synslide additive technology to provide the exceptional film strength necessary for GL-5 applications, yet it is noncorrosive to soft metals found in manual transmissions that specify a GL-4 rated lubricant.
