A friend of mine has a 90 240 sx and changed the transmission fluid. He just bought it a week ago. His transmission bolt was kinda loose or not seated right and it has been dripping fluid for a little. The guy changed it right before he bought it and never put it on right. Tonight he replaced it with a gl-5 I tried to tell him it wasnt what he was supposed to use, but there was nothing else available and he seen just to use 80w-90. Now that I am near the forum and proved it to him what should he do. Should he change it right away. Will having it in there a day affect anything? He said it feels a little better, but that is probably because it has the recommended amount of oil.

Any help would be appreciated. I already hit him pretty hard.

dont freak just have him change it. Its when it gets really cold out that it can cause a problem with shifting.

Any long term effects. Like as the hours tick by they corrode (synchros) causing irreversible damage.

i think that gl-5 75w-90 is the recomended gear oil for the transmission. viscosity will do nothing except make it hard to shift if it is too thick.

NOPE!!! but thanks for playing.

anyway, the GL5 fluid is corrosive to the synchronizers [which are made of brass] due to the extreme pressure additives inorder to make hypoid gears happy [rear end ring and pinion]

the effects are not immediate. the synchros will last 40-50% of what they would had the proper GL4 fliud been used.

the synchros arent evaporating as we speak, but they will not last as long.

at the earliest possible convienence, replace the fluid with the proper GL4 fluid.

oh yea that too, I think the instructor mentioned something along those lines during manual trans training this week.

no you dont want to run it in the car its more like this weekend or next weekend you guys should take a few mins and change it out. Oh and by the way dont use synthetic I was informed they are starting to see failures of grinding trans due to the synthetic fluid being too slick and not giving the syncros the chance to brake the gear during shifting. Your car is not under warrenty anylonger but I guess they are denying claims on transmissions in the 6 speed spec-v's and 6 speed 350 z's that test as having synthetic fluid installed. something to keep in mind when selecting fluids.

what would you recommend for replacement fluid, and how long does it take for damage to occur because i've had it in there for like a month. im dirt poor b/c im 16 and make 5.15/hr, so maby something fairly cheap.thanks

Change it out as soon as possible, i put GL-5 Valvoline 80w90 in my transmission during the summer of 2003. Just recently put Redline Synthetic 75w90 in. The things they say about gl-5 eating at your syncros is completely true, since i have witnessed it firsthand on my own car.

Shifting is much rougher now, high rpm shifting can sometimes be shady... I am planning to put in some real thick Redline shockproof to fix this during spring/summer. It will not happen right away, really only got worse once the weather started getting cold... so maybe took 4-5 months to get where it is now.

transmission fluid was your normal amber/brownish oil color when poured in..... when i drained it it was teal LOL. Yummy brass corrosion!

Edit: 240kid just go to MyOilShop.com they carry all types of redline synthetic, which are all GL-4 rated. Its about $7 a quart, and you only need 3 (transmission holds 2.5 liters) ;) . But really any GL-4 only rated oil will be fine.

standard old gl-4 from the auto parts store. It will do the job.

It is bad we placed an order for mt90 from redline thatll go in as as soon as it gets here. It sucks shifting now. It is like you have to wait a few seconds before putting it from neutral into the next gear. Bugus and notchy. He needs to change it

thats an excellant choice [redline MT-90]

if your broke, a standard dino-oil 75w90 GL4 fluid will do just fine.

Ive heard some great things about redline though. Not a blemish on their record as far as Ive heard. I was torn between them and amsoil. Redline won because I found their site first. Stupid way to choose, but when their is a forum topic opn which is better and it goes on and on. Then it is all just opinion. I ordered some for mine too. Cant wait to get it in.

i think i am going to go with mt-90 because $21 really isnt that much money, ill just have to put in a few extra hours.

+1 for mt90. got it in my 6speed that holds less oil than the 5speed. transmission stays nice and cool even when driving hard.around 70degreesC.shifts nice too.
