The last straw has come, it's time to put a modern unit in the 90 Q and retire the Bose and speakers. I have seen photos on this site of well done head units with a small storage area underneath. Any links to guide me to steal the good ideas with pride? Thanks

Check out my systemhttp://www.cardomain.com/ride/2299831

I work in car audio & did it all myself with used equiptment I refurbished myself, except the new high definition headunit. But if it was a customer's car, this system would run about $2500-$3000.I have a DVD player under the radio, if I didn't have the video system a storage pocket would go there.

I really like the sound of the stock set up in the 94. It is smooth with a natural character and it throws a decent soundstage. I remember some years back I was driving with Dennis Had (in my 93), President of Cary Audio, and he was taken back by "our" Q's house sound. Dennis makes world class speciality amps/preamps/DACs and has a good ears.

If you must do Young Joc at pavement splitting SPLs then yes, a new rig would be called for. But if you looking for a great very good sounding systems and you desire to the keep the dash stock I would just replace the head unit with one from a parts car and check all the speakers and replace where necessary.

Nakamichi is the best, period. Unfortunately, financial problems kept them from exporting their hardware, so you'll have to look on eBay for unopened units.

Its worth it. I'm considering replacing my very good Alpine for a very awesome Nak.

Remember, the headunit is not generally the first thing to go, the electrolythic capacitors in the amps are what goes. the uneven volume, squealing and other nastiness results.I had rebuilt my amps, but having a hypercritical ear, I grew tired of the dull, lifeless sound of the Bose system. It's 2006. I couldn't even play my MP3 discs and had to use a hideous looking external tuner for satellite radio.

I think there are lots of nice double-din units out there. Nachamichi from ebay? why bother. You can get decent Kenwood, Pioneer, Clarion, and Eclipse units. I think the key is to get a good installer that can put the unit in and make it look very nice.

I was looking at a Nav system by Ecplise that was double din and was suppose to work with the Bose speakers. I would for sure look at double din units and stay away from the Best Buys and Circuit City places, I would never let one of those places touch my car. Find a good local place that only deals in car audio. These places are becoming more and more rare these days and many have dropped Sony, Kenwood, and others as they do not to compete.

I had Clarions and Kenwoods in my cars and they are very good.

As for my 97' Bose, I think it is darn good system for a stocker. I have a built out Kenwood with V12 Alpine amps and subwoofer tube, spent around $2000 on it in my Z, it sound amazing, but the bose is pretty acceptable. BTW, the head until is a Clarion in my year Q, not sure the stocker head until in first gen.

The problem with most aftermarket systems is they do not provide an individual equalizer for each individual speaker to optimize the response at the driver or passenger ear.

Unfortunately every human has a different acoustic [frequency vs loudness contour] depending upon age and exposure and genetics.

Differences in left and right ear and interior absorbtion varies with interior temperature.

All in all wireless headphones [for everyone] are the best solution.
