Hey I was thinking about getting a phanton grip lsd and then after putting that thing in I am going to weld it tight. What do you guys think of that?

why put a phantom in if your going to weld it? I run welded diff in both my fastback and ae86. All i can say is i hope you are 100% confident in your skill as a driver (years of practice my friend). Im assuming your doing it for non-drag reasons. Really not safe or practical for a daily driven car, i would say track only (bring lots of tires). I drive welded diff daily but i live in a part of idaho were no one is around or cares and good roads are plentiful, ive drivin up and down the various mountain roads my whole life in all seasons. You wear out tires quick and if you dont feel confident enough for downshift and full throttle through corners it will understeer like a mofo, especially with large overall diameter tires.

Just weld up your diff and see how you like it, you probably wont but open diffs are cheap.

if you got the phantom grip put it in, from what I've heard you will want the stuff spring kit too.then see how you like it. if you don't like it (not locking up well enough?) then sell it and weld your open diff. if you don't like that, I guess its time to pony up for clutch or helical, depending on your flava.

not that many people have used the R200 phantom grip, so its hard to gauge its effectiveness. the one person I know to use it on a 240 for drifting said he loved it.a couple guys use them for drag racing and report no complaints.

welded diffs suck for a street car, for a race only car that might be a viable option. I'd avoid it, makes turning too ****ing hard.

clutch type lsd will bump and grind during daily driving but other than that its pretty liveable unless you go with a really agressive one packed full of disks, in which case it would probably have the same problems that a welded diff would.

helical LSD's are good for grip driving, and a few guys used them on some SCCA cars with varying degrees of success. quaife makes one and the S15 units lurk on ebay constantly.

stock VLSD works good if its in good shape, once they get broken in they are slowler to react. they usually won't lock up completely, so you will always have a little bit of open diff with a bit of LSD...and they wear out pretty quick, at least on cars that are driven hard.
