Today I picked up a wingless trunk lid for my s14 for $20. Don't like the spoiler on my car

Just a question..I went out and got estimates on getting it painted. What would be a reasonable price to have it painted? My car is superblack. Went to 5 places and the cheapest place i found was $350.

Here are some pics of the lid i picked up

What color is your car? If you prep it well enough you could paint it yourself, that is always an option. But yea you are going to get much cheaper then $300 unless you go to Maaco.

ask them what type of paint their using. if its real expensive paint then its not a horrible deal. otherwise id get a buddy to paint it. hell i would paint that for half that price. good luck!

black can hard color to match, especially panel to panel. you will see the difference. most likely you'll want to scuff the top of your rear quarters and blend the new paint over onto them and re-clear the quarters along with your trunk. thats just my take on it.

but for a trunk, i couldn't see paying more than 200 bucks here. do a lot of the prep work yourself, and as long as their are no dents; rattle can primer w/ a light black mist for a guide coat and block it out yourself will get you damn good results and they only have to put it in the booth and paint it. its ridiculously easy, if you read up on it enough, you will be able to do it

I hear good things about the place charging me $350. people at g35driver has recommended this shop many times for paint jobs. So i'm pretty sure its good paint. A friend of mine told me to go to them because their quality is good.

I don't know what to do yet. I'll be mounting it on to see if it fits and not bent before bringing it in for paint. My dad knows a guy that'll paint it for cheaper than $350 but don't like the quality he does because he's done my old integra years ago.

I was hoping to drop $150-$200 on this job

Things going through my mind.. should i go cheap since its only the trunk lid? but then again i like my car to be clean looking. Cheap paint would probably last a couple years..maybe by then i'll have a chance to paint my entire car.

yes paint is really hard to match period...but unless you have the original car color then they will use your vin number to figure out which black it is! i think 350 is expensive!!! Seriously 350 can buy you almost all the materials to paint your whole car.

That depends on the color though...

For a shop to paint it, $350 sounds about right...but at the same time, it almost sounds like that's a little too much just for the trunk lid. It honestly takes no more than 45 min to prep out the whole thing...painting it doesn't take that much longer either.

Paint it yourself! Just get the color code and find some matching paint. Idk if duplicolor sells manufacture colors in cans but im sure another brand does. I rattle can stuff all the time and it never looks bad as long as you do it right.(btw the black on the bottom half of my car on my sig is duplicolor gloss black, no runs and its been holding great for a year now)

some sand paper..pretty sure multiple gritsprimercolorsander (electric or air)acetone?

There is a small dent on the middle of the lid..how would i cover that up? what is the stuff they use on tv..the green stuff

Evercoat. You can sand by hand all you need is a block, you do no need primer unless its down to bare metal.

800 grit to remove the gloss and some of the paint, 1000 grit to smooth it out, wash it and make sure its nice and clean. 2 coats primer, sand with 1000 grit, another 2 coats of primer, sand again, and again till you have a nice, heavy, smooth coat. Do the same for applying the color paint. if you get any runs just sand it smooth with 800 grit and work it down with 1k grit until there's no more swirls from the 800. Dont do random zig zags when applying the paint, just straight lines from one end to the other. The dent could maybe be covered up with bondo but make sure you know what your doing. Look up bondo videos on youtube, how to's etc. Bondo is a bit hard if your just starting but you'll get the hang of it.

Then I would have to say let a shop do this. Sanding, spraying primer, and even spraying the color is not too difficult...but laying down the clear coat takes some skill though.

naw bro you'll need 320 to sand idown the paint 800 will take to long and then wet sand it with 800...and kh3 man should be cheap i remember paying 50 bucks for a quart of kh3 and i panted my roof and my engine bay with it! so you'll need a pint and it should be at least half of that. That was for a single stage and you can still color sand that and buff it. It'll come out like a two stage paint job!

Do something different. Keep the trunk lid white, kinda like anti-cf hood.

Just kidding.

However, did you ask the dealer? My buddy who had a S2000 went to the dealer and it only cost him 150 (let just say under 200) to paint the bumper. So assuming you have the time and ability to do the prep work, painting them will be way cheaper too.

My brother painted his fender himself with rattle can. Prep work, layers of paint, clear coat, wet sand and wax will make it looks great.

I'm gonna have my dad's friend check it out tomorrow to see how much he'll charge.

Yes $20 is a steal...especially with the jdm silvia 3rd brake light being so rare. Ebay has one for $350 and zilvia has one for $250

Found it on craigslist.

I took it in my dad's friends shop for $200. Will probably get it back Monday or Tuesday. I will post pics when I get it back and on the car.

Well I got my trunk lid put on last friday. Paint quality isn't really all that great but for $200 I really shouldn't complain because I saw it coming. Needs wet sanding since I can see orange peel but I won't do it until I get my bumpers or entire car painted.

Overall, I'm glad I went spoiler-less as it looks so much better and the body flows much nicer

Weather was nice out today so I snapped some pics with the s***ty iphone. Once I get my car washed and waxed..maybe next week because its supposed to rain this weekend..I will get better pictures up.

Here are the pics

Its funny to say that seeing as how I've painted my entire car, a friends entire car, 3 sets of rims (1 set my brothers, other two mine), front bumper off my last 240, all of my interior trim pieces, my taillights, friends taillights, friends grill, my brothers grill, and a crap load of other small things, I'd say i have. Maybe not as much as some people in here but I'm speaking from my own experience and nothing I've painted has ever chipped, ran, cracked, or any other crazy stuff. I've never told anyone to do something unless i was positive of it myself and had experience with it personally. stfu

To the op, doesn't look bad at all! Cant even tell there's orange peel (unless the pictures don't expose it well enough).
