Dealer says I have to go to a locksmith in town and pay 80-$100 is this normal?

I thought it sounded high for a car without a chip in the key. This is without the remote. I bought it from an auction and only got one key w one remote. I was thinking of just getting 1 ket w no extra remote, if I do this how do I turn the alarm off if the second key has no remote?

TIA

Shea

Thats normal. Here in St Louis the dealers refer you to one locksmith. $40.

Getting the top quality key from Infiniti, cut by referencing your VIN should be ~$110 ordered through the dealer, anything else should only be used as a temp/emergency key.

Is your 1 key a big heavy "sexy" looking key? Or does it look like a hardware store special?

BTW, I paid $14 for a local locksmith to cut a temp key for me, I bought the blank for <$15. Once cut they should start by testing it on the glove box, then pass door, trunk and finally the drivers door.

I paid $40 in Sacramento. It took the locksmith less than 5 minutes to cut and it was an aftermarket key, nothing fancy like the original. Infiniti referred me to the locksmith and said they would charge $150 to send away my VIN to the big office and have one cut. I use the locksmith key as a backup.

You should have a small (maybe 1cm wide and 4 or 5 long) plate that came with the car. It has a number on it. Give that to the dealer and they should be able to cut you as many keys as you want. It will be expensive, but you should not need a locksmith. Even if you don't have the plate, they should be able to do it by VIN, as Rex said.

Be glad you don't have a Volkswagen. You have to get them from the dealer, and the fob and key are integrated so they cost upward of $400 PER KEY.

Here are a couple of interesting picture from Nissan's world press site. I wish they'd do more like this instead of having a big arse keychain as well as a key:

I went to Wal-Mart, and a had a key made... I have the what I think is the original key - big *** key, with the Infiniti engraving, and the original remote for the security setup...

Anyway, I had an extra made, and it wouldn't unlock the driver's side door? I tried the glove box - works fine... I didn't try anything else after that.

I'll give the trunk a shot, but I know for a fact the driver's door wasn't opening, and the ignition wasn't turning... Whats up with that?

Thanks.

No chip in G50 key. Get an original from Joe.

Cheap keys are soft and will be eaten by steel in ignition mechanism. When you replace that, OEM key will seem cheap.

Mail order locksmith for non-OEM key:

McLock Locksmith(864) 934-3411 or (864) 231-9671E-mail: [email protected]

I own a J30, not a Q45 - I know I'm in the wrong forum, but thought it might apply to all Infiniti's...

So the key that opens the glove compartment, is junk - and won't open anything else...?

Thanks for the info... I can't see paying more then $50 for a damn key!

At least, first and second-gen Q45 drivers have an option - us M45 drivers have the problem of not having a key! It is integrated with the keyfob and the chip/radio for the electronic start.

Very expensive to replace ... near $250 or so as I recall. Fortunately, I picked up a spare on eBay for $75 ... just to be safe.

call Joe. s/b ~100 for the sexy key with cutting included. they reference your VIN and the envelope that the new one comes in will have the 'key code' for future ref. you can also buy a fully functioning [i.e. not valet] wallet size key for about $70.

What about E-bay. I have seen all sorts of uncut "high security" keys that look a lot like my original. I wonder how good they are?

Yeah, I bought a set of those for $12. That's not the problem. It's psychologically getting over having to pay $45 to have it cut. I've shopped around town for the cheapest price and can't find it any cheaper. It just doesn't seem right. I don't care if it does have to be laser cut. It's just a key! BTW, I haven't had them cut yet...

They are way too soft and will wear the ignition prematurely by leaving metal deposits. Price out a new lockset if you think these are a "bargain."

Here in Houston there are several real locksmiths that use hard steel key blanks. What makes the Infiniti key expensive to cut is both the thickness and depth of the cuts have to be perfect--and it has to be cut on all 4 edges. It IS NOT laser cut. One could use EDM 0electro-discharge-machining--but it definitely is not necessary. Keeping the keys CLEAN is an important factor in how long the lock cylinder lasts. If you have the tumbler 're-keyed' to the original setting before it jams, its not expensive--but the labor to R&R is not triffling.
