I know K & Ns are not recommended for the M but at $20.00 a paper filter it will take only a few miles to make it worth while. The other issue I heard about was getting oil on sensors from the filter. I was planning on running it a tad bit more dry to reduce the possibility of oil covering the sensors. Any one else do this? I will try to dyno it as well to see what the difference is in power.

Thanks, Kyle

There is nothing wrong with K&N Filters at all! Just make sure they are not dripping OIL, and when you re-oil them, make sure it is not dripping oil...

As far as factory filter... its an oiled filter as well, they just are not dripping oil...

Factory INFINITI Filter:

$9.45

Fortunately for the drop in aftermarket, buyers don't make scientific measurements to evaluate the pressure drop thru filters if they did they would see no material difference [<1%].

Modern designs have very little restriction from atmospheric pressure thru to and including the airfilter. The bulk of restriction occur in the MAF and intake valves.

Future owners may curse the after effects that the poor filtration K&N have on ring and bearing wear but most owners don't care about the 2 future owners...............unless they look them up in the middle of the night.

Where's the best (cheapest) place to buy a factory air filter?

Thanks. I've dealt with him before. He's a good guy.

I keep hearing that K&N's are bad. But why exactly? I've had them in all of my cars for the past 15 years and never saw any problems.Q45Tech's warnings have me worried though.

Can someone chime in and give an explanation as to why they're considered detrimental? Thanks.

K&Ns are a topic of discussion and sometimes heated debate on most any forum involving cars, bikes and even boats. I'll boil it down for you quickly, or you can spend a few hours with the web and do your own research. Basically, the K&N (oiled cotton gauze) type filters do not filter particles as small or as well we a conventinal paper filter. So yes, they can flow a bit more air. Will you notice the difference and is it worth the cost and risk ? That's something only you can decide.

As others have stated here, the factory intakes on the M's (old and new) are pretty damn good. You will certainly gain more intake noise with a conical K&N type filter, but you may not be going any faster.

I agree also with what others have said in the past that the engineers have pretty much tweeked the intake and exhaust to help the engine out as much as possible for the OEM.This subject will go on and on forever and there will be people on both sides of the fence.

If you feed your family or stockholders via producing or selling aftermarket products you will say almost anything even lie thru your teeth [and leave it to attorney's to sort out].

Most people dump new cars when the warranty runs out and could careless about what happens at 150k, 200k or 300k.

Used buyers should be more careful and learn the signs that aftermarket filter or other ABUSE may leave.

When we do prebuy inspections for customers we warn them about things like this.

K&N use to promote that their air filter were used in Army heliocopters in the desert until so many crashed......................not saying they were the exact cause but I haven't seen these ads in a few years.

I will prove it on the dyno hopefully soon! I guess for me it is $45 for K & N or $20.00 over and over. Price breaks even over 2 filters and then ever other dollar goes in my pocket.

Q45tech... many advertising campaigns are forced to change due to tragedy or coincidence. The bottom line is that K&N filters do the job well, and you do save money if you use them for a few years. As far as a performance gain... it's probably marginal... you probably get more power if you run with no filter at all. It's a necessary evil and you might as well save money over the life of your vehicle.

Actually the MAF is calibrated with oem air box and filter prior to the rock screen.

Changing the shape or turbulence of the air flow into MAF can result in errors which may or may not improve performance.

Unfortunate the MAF output is non linear and exponential in nature.

The equation has a constant [Y] + X^3.5 power so minor changes in voltage can present to the ecu large imaginary changes in air flow and thus fuel injection changes results.

Of all the aftermarket items available at least a properly limited oil K&N drop in filter is probably the most benign!

Most ring damage won't show up until after 150,000 miles anyway.
