getting my 240 in time

i got a 92 240 sx it started but then while its running it has a nock but not a constant like lifters chattering but more like a clinkity clack type deal any way while its idealing if u turn the distributer advancing the time it gets better well i took the distributer out and when i put it back in it wont start the pluggs are fouled i need to no how to get it back in time and i thats what you all even think my problem is. the motor is a stock 2.4 16 valve dohc

may have the distributor in too advanced or retarded try restabbing
