getting manufacture date from VIN

is there a way to figure out when the car was made from the VIN

Yes the VIN contains pretty much all the options the car came with along with the manufacture date.

If you look at the VIN sticker on the door jamb it gives the month/year of manufacture.

According to this site the actual VIN# does not contain the actual build date:
