Post

Hello again fellow Alitima owners. I haven't been on in a while, but I'm coming home from Ft. Leonard Wood on Thursday and I've already got car parts coming in the mail, so I'll be on here asking a bunch of questions and giving you updates on my car.

So far, all I've got on my car is the 19'' TSW Thruxtons on Falken rubber which I posted in another thread. If you've forgotten, here's another pic...

Anyway, since the car has been garaged the last few months, some parts have been waiting patiently to go on. First off, I have a set of Lamin-X yellow fog light covers waiting to jump on the car. Secondly, I'm currently awaiting the arrival of my Eibach Pro Kit from Stillen, and will be trying to put those on within the next 2-3 weeks. Finally I've ordered the first part of my custom exhaust project.

I'm a big fan of the ole' Greddy Evo style "dunk" muffler cat-back look, and that is what I want on my car without the $800-1000 price tag. So I plan to go a different and most def. a cheaper route. I first ordered a pair of OBX Evo style mufflers http://i10.ebayimg.com/04/i/07/fb/ef/e0_1.JPG . Now before I get flamed on here for buying what some might consider "crap", I'll let you know that on my previous car, 03 Ford Focus, I had 4-5 different exhaust combo's before I was happy with looks/performance/sound. I had 2 custom exhaust, Bosal catback, Borla catback, and OBX race header/Catback combo and the OBX brand was the best bang for it's buck.

I've had no problems with OBX, and I see no reason to buy 2 Magnaflow or Greddy or any other big brand muffler for a crapload more money when the OBX looks and does the same exact thing. So that is why I settled on the OBX mufflers. I got them both for $140 ish shipped to my door.

Next I plan to go to my trusted local shop to fab up the remaining piping. I plan to use a nice straight thru resonator to tone down the sound. The questions that I have is regarding piping size. I couldn't find specs on the Greddy or Stillen for that matter but I want to know what 2 sizes I should use for the main pipe after the first flange where the custom work and resonator will go. I was thinking either 2.75'' or 3'' would work but I want your opinions.

Second, the secondary pipes going into the mufflers, I was thinking either 2.25'' or 2.5''. But again, your opinions would be greatly appreciated. I will also be getting another set of flanges welded in somewhere after the resonators but before the mufflers on the secondary piping. I'm doing this so that it will be easier to take off and put back on. Plus it'll be more "factory" looking. After the exhaust is all welded on, I'll prob. take it off back home and paint all of the piping and resonator in high heat flat black paint, giving it a nice HKS/Euro flavor. The mufflers will be left alone though.

So throughout my rambling, I really just want opinions on the two piping diameters. I don't want to lose power for going to big. On my Focus, anything bigger than 2.5'' was used for forced induction, and I'm really not that familier with the Altima's V6 characteristics. Anyway, my plans aren't that complicated and after all is said and done the price tally should add up like this.

Mufflers = $140Resonator = $50-120Piping = $50-100Flanges = $25Labor = $100-150Paint = $15

Minimum Grand Total = $380Max Grand Total = $550

Either way the price goes, I'll still have a heck of a deal on a solid system. So please guys and gals, help me out with the diameters so that when my mufflers get here I can go to the muffler shop with exactly the specs I need. I'll be sure to post up progress pics on my "Do it yourself Greddy catback".

sounds like its gonna be a nice setup! i to wanted to go with the greddy 'evo2' style canisters. ive been on a look out for someone parting out with the mufflers. i didnt know obx has a similar style. can i ask where you got the 2 mufflers from? $140 shipped sounds like a good price. me personally i think 2.5" pipping from the cat back should be perfect. i think 3" might be a little to big. like you said 3" set ups are usually used in forced induction set ups. please post pics and videos when your set up is done!

Custom will be cheaper, and I'll get the look that I want. Hopefully the sound will be right on too.

I got the two mufflers from http://www.sparktecmotorsports.com.

i did a custom setup on my car as well.

i took out my cat, and did 3in piping into 2.5in piping, and back into 3in mufflers. my mufflers look like the ones from the Greddy SP setup.

look at my thread here, it came out really good.
