I am having no luck removing the drivers side axle nut on my 96 maxime, I got the correct 36mm socket and tried using a 1/2 drive ratchet with no luck, I also soaked it in pb blaster. So i went to autozone and got an 18in breaker bar (1/2 drive also) and it snapped on me. So I went and returned it got another and tried the pipe trick on the end, that breaker bar snapped also and i cant exchange it now and dont want to buy another. Also tried my air gun and impact wrench at 140psi with no luck. Whats a guy got to do to get a damn axle nut off?

That thing is rusted on or something. You did remove the cotter pin, correct?

Your impact wrench probably doesn't have enough nuts to handle the factory torque that was applied to the nut. I've never had a problem removing one with my impact wrench.

Spray the hell out of it with PB Blaster, and try again.

yes i took the cotter pin out, the thing has to be rusted something good on there, of course i know they are torque'd down like a monkey from the factory. My impact wrench Im sure doesnt have that kinda torque, either way gonna have my mechanic friend do it, didnt want to have to pay to have it done, but need it done asap and Im busy moving out of my house etc.

thanks all

Get a 3/4 racket and a 3/4 to 1/2 adapter with you cheater bar. sears or a semi truck part store may have this stuff. If the car is not on the ground have a friend hold the brakes while you try to take the nut off. At the shop I worked at this did the trick.

On my 96 I30, my father in law and I broke a 1/2" torque wrench. Finally, we decided to use the impact gun on it and just let it keep hitting. Took about 30 seconds and it started to move slightly.

Are you replacing the axle? Might be to your best benefit to cut off the nut or drill into the axle. Not a great option, but still an option.
