I am. I'm getting a 'auto '96 civic for DD duties and a '95 or '97 whatever money permits) 240sx as a project car. But I'm gonna do as much work myself as humanly possible and I've never done anything other than simple maintenence on my car so it'll prolly be "down" for long perieods of time.

Hey, get a '85 collorlla gt-s and then you can be teh supreme drifter dude.

That's a tough question. It depends on how your lifestyle is. If you work full time, if you go to school full time, stuff like that. It that case, I, personally would suggest a beater. However, there's gonna be a point when your "beater" will have problems as well. So just keep that in mind. I think with the money that you'll buy your beater with, you can make your 240 perfect and not have problems. The only reason why us US people have problems is because not many people are familiar with the SR20DET. We always find a way to fix it, it just takes a little longer. But I'm sure with some $$$, you can have it running perfect....

personally i went the beater route. I got a 91 integra, and yea it will break but they are easy as hell to work on. So now i can leave the 240 at home in the garage, and not have to worry about people messing with it at school, or work, or where ever i may go. THe front wheel drive beater is also great for the winter right now, so i have the 240 in storage. and another thought is i am actually saving money on insuranve, about 400 a year, buy dropping the 240 to fire, and theft during the winter. I guess this would depend if you have bad winters like me here in chicago.

What mods does your 95 240sx have to gain the 13.9?

injen cai, asp pulley, hks hyper, catco cat, top gun direct port 100 shot. Ran that on 17's, with street tires, couldn't launch very well. I am selling everything off the ka, and all my performance stuff. My sr20det is on the way. Daunt will probably be putting mine in in january. :)

Yeah one of the guys I work with built up an '89 trans am. He said that he got tired of asking for rides from friends and the winters were brutal, not only no traction but the corosion from the salt in the roads wasn't good for the car. Also for going into bad neighborhoods, for going to parties so your friends don't trash your good car when they drive your drunk *** home stuff like that. Well not that you have to worry about winter but you still need a beater for down time with any project car, he had an '88 civic, the thing was one hell of a rust bucket but was in good mechanical shape and got him to work and back, that's all you really need, some '80s honda heap and keep the engine in good running condition, me I'm going with an '80s crx, hopefully I won't get the erge to do anything to it:pface!

Peace(sorry I'm kinda long winded at times)

Think of it this way: Do the Silvia owners in Japan need beaters? If you are only going to be doing mild modifications to your car like intake, exhaust, bov, boost controller, ect., Then you shouldn't need a beater. But if you are making the car a show car and intend on high modifications(fully build bottom end, big turbo, ect.)then I would consider it...You have to remember this isn't a race engine, it's an engine from Japan that has less than 35000 miles, then i wouldn't worry about it...

jemil118 - your "In japan they don't need a beater" car argument is kinda silly. One - in Japan they have the most sophisticated public transit system in the world. The Japenese for the most part don't need one car much less two. Secondly if the only reason was down time then yeah..... prolly wouldn't need one but take me personally:

I'll need a automatic beater because on the outskirts of LA the hills are a **radio edit** if you're just trying to get to class or work and not worried about enjoying the ride. Plus sometimes you just want to cruise.

And I'll commute 20-80 miles a day. I don't want to put 20k miles a year on my 7-8k motor. would you?

and this wouldn't affect me personally but if the winters are harsh and the roads covered in salt and parts of trees it'd be nice to have a car that you don't have to worry about.

Again not trying to flame just tryng to...

**in best morpheus voice **

free your mind. :pface

Amen brother, preach it! I have too much fun with manual to go back to automatic though:D, and the hills in harlem aren't all that tame either but I manage.

HAHA, for a while I didn't either.

Beaters are good, Just make sure its in good running condition. My friend just pulls all his insurance in the winter, then in the spring he pulls all the insurance on the beater and lets it sit. Driving the car for only half the year, he may only put 15k on it (not that its swapped or anything but....).

yea but beaters are so much fun. If you rag it out- its fun. If you wreck it its fun. If you want to kick a huge dent in it its fun. If someone trys to steal it its funny. No worries all fun. I have one and its awesome. every one needs a beater.

my friend just got a 91 crx, and i was driving my 91 teg. We were playing bumper cars in a parking lot. Not really daminging the cars bad, but tapping the front and back bumpers, its also nice being able to pull up into a space with a shopping cart and either hit it, or not care if the wind blows it into your car. Was definatly fun running into each other though.

That's hilarious! Bumper cars! :rotflmao

Anywho I'm going the opposite approach. I want a nicer car. I'll be in it about 60% of the time I'll want something decent like a "95 or "96 civic. great MPG, can put 250,000 miles on the car relitivly trouble free and won't be embarrased of my $900 dolar car at college when I'm talking to a girl. :pface.

Plus it'll still be worth enough in two or so years to be able to sell for my final round of mods on the 240. :)

If I can resist "powered by Mugen" stickers and 5 inch exhaust tips, I'll be home free :D

ahh another grat use of the beater. I am trying to teach my girlfriend how to drive stick, and if she is dumps the clutch at 4000 and just spins the clutch i really dont car. Actually its a pretty nice car, no rust or anything. Has 183,000 miles on it, but runs stong. Gota love honda's for that. I know the car wasn't beat on, because i got it off my brothers wife. But your right about being embarassed, i definatly get alot more looks in my 240.

Yeah the looks thing is kinda true I'd like to roll around in like a late 80's benz or something, or maybe a mid ninties maxima, yeah with two tens in the back, 5% all around, 18" rims, one of those fancy $20 japanese air fresheners... But who am I kidding, I can barely afford the 240 and the swap, late 80's honda here I come:(...

Peace

\Okay, fine then, but remeber that Japan isn't the only country in the world with the 200sx/Siliva...what about Australia or England? Do those people have a great public transport system that enables them not to need more than one car? I don't think so....

ok, but in japan. thats how the car comes stock. So thats like saying if you have a 240sx should i get a beater. Depeneds on what you want to do to the car. If your talking about realability im sure the sr is fine, because nissan builds awsome motors. But if your like me and spending thousands of dollars to get the sr, and upgrades, then its hard to compare our sr's to theres. They will probably be leaving theres stock, or if they do build it to a 450Hp monster, i bet its not a daily driver.

This is exactly what I didn't want to happen. You're getting defensive. But since we're on the subject saying that other countries (like ours) don't have great ways to get around just makes a case for a beater, not against it.

Anyway, each to their own I guess.

Yeah but that's the thing about japan that tunning their cars is huge over there it's not unusual to see suped up 180's, sylvia's and integras, it's like driving around San Diego but bigger. They love turbos and bolt on power which is why the aftermarket in japan is so big. True every car in japan doesn't run with 450hp to the wheels but you'll be surprised as to what people roll around with to work, school, store and the like. Super street did an article about a daily driver in japan, the car was clean looking with some nice stuff under the hood. And the article didn't mention anything about a beater, but I guess the multi car thing is something that us americans have gotten use to. Eh, whatever it's all good yo, I'll try to dig up that article it's pretty interesting.

Peace.

Yeah I remeber that one. The 180sx. Thats kind of the direction I want to go with my project car. Only I clean my car religiously.
