Hey guys, I now have a Honda Civic but am selling it to buy my friends SR20DET powered 89' 240sx Hatch. And im really into audio and it sounding good in my Civic Now I have 2 15" Kicker L5 powerd by a Lanzar 1600 watt amp and redid all the 6.5 to 6x9 using spacers. They look alright but after I dyed the wood it was presentable but as for my understanding the 240sx that im gettign has 4x6 all around? Now i cant have that I need to put some 6x9's I was also looking at a memebers door panels that he did I belive his name was ayjay. Well I wish I could have ur door panels or knew of someone who could make some door panels like that for the 240sx But my question is do you all have any outlined or Pictures showing on how to convert the 4x6's to 6x9's..or maybe someone who can do some sort of things like ayjay did to his ride. much props on that btw ayjay.

Thnx- Mark

A few people (& 1 sponsor for awhile) built plates for the doors, but tracing the OEM mounting plate and then mounted 6.5's. I'm not sure you could get a 6x9 in the door, or if you'd want to??

In the rear of a hatch, I'd guess you could do about anything you want.

IIRC, there was some pics of a guy with 6x9's in his doors as the grills are oval aqnd he thought they'd fit, but he ended up butchering his door panels to get them to fit.

In short, make some mounting plates and use 6.5's is my recommendation.

6x9s aren't going into that door smoothly, not a chance, unless you plan you going all out on your doorpanels like ayjay did.

i don't like my door panels :P i might rework them some more this summer to make em nicer, but i didn't spend a lot of time finishing them. they're functional, but not the prettiest. chicks don't appreciate them they just say "oh... cool......" then there's some people who are like "hey! you're the guy with those doors!!!"

tough to work with the stock speaker location, not only mounting the speaker in there, but providing enough clearance in the door panel. my next install of 3-ways will have the 6.5" in the stock location with stock lookin doorpanels, i'll somehow build kickpods to fit the 4"s in, and the tweets are going in the A pillars pointed toward center of windshield... apparently it sounds the best, but all depends on what the speaker manufacturer recommends. best to have mids and highs as far away as possible, but you don't wanna bring the soundstage too low, so you gotta compromise a little.

one thing to keep in mind when installing your nice new speakers in the doors is that they'll pretty much be running free air unless you build some kind of enclosure for them to seal up the air space... so don't expect lots of bass. another thing is rattles, cause if you have an old s13 like mine, the door panel will probably rattle like hell, so play your speakers first and then sound deaden till you're content. have fun with it

oh and fitting 6x9's is a lot harder to do than to fit 6.5's... what i would do first is figure out how deep the basket/magnet can go in through the metal opening in the door panel and of course avoiding the window. if it looks as if the 6x9 will have to be positioned too far out of the door so that it will require major modding of the door panel, then look at cutting away some metal in the door with some cheap cutting blades on a dremel. the door panel is what you see, you don't see the ugly stuff you do behind it, so avoid having to mod your door panel too much. build a ring for the 6x9 no thinner than 1/4" mdf and screw it onto the door panel... you might wanna sand the area around where you're gonna put the ring down cause you're gonna probably want to bondo around the ring to create a nice tight seal and bondo sticks better to roughed up surfaces. people might think bondo will rattle appart, but it won't, it's strong ****. then work on fitting the door panel and if need be, use the speaker grills that came with the speakers and work those into your door panel somehow.

Alright I think im just gonna go With 6.5 in Front and then 6x9s in the front Im gonna go with SPL brand cause my bros got em and they sound good one juiced with some amp power. So im gonna do that and then a custom enlosure for my subs to hit the back of the fold down seat and have the amp bracketed on the wall too. Me and my dad like to brainstorm on just audio boxes we made one and didnt like the way it turned out so we had it laying around and my friend bought it off of me for $140 so im happy. Another question I have though is to how am I supposed to run monster wire to the speakers and get rid of the 15+ year old speaker wire.

It's not going to be easy, but the only way is to snake through the old location. One good way is to tape the new wires to the end of the old, lube 'em up and pull/work the old wire out, thus pulling the new wire in. It's not fun or easy work, if it was, everyone would do it. It might be worth researching to see if you have any extra wires (power windows/locks) in the door and remove them to make room.

Some manufacturers run the wire either way, so you may be able to remove them for space savings.

i honestly would not try to shove that speaker wire through that crappy old n' crammed gromet... if you're running amps for your front speakers, then just run the speaker wire underneath the plastic door sill, and then continue it underneath the next piece of plastic that curves up towards your dash.

have the speaker wire come out from under the top of that plastic piece and just run the speaker wire straight accross and under the door panel... if the speaker wire is wrapped with black electrical tape, you'll barely even notice it branching across to your door panel with the door open, and when the door is closed, you won't even see it.

you can do the same thing if you're just runnin the speakers off deck power, just go straight from the deck, behind the dash, and then go behind that plastic piece i was talkin about before that runs up to your dash/glove box. and then branch it over to your door panel with enough slack so that your door will open without tugging on the wire.

Yea it's a pain to run new wires to the door. Although only tools I had to work with was my hand and a clothes hanger. I did this at night when I had no light. Thinking back it would be easy if you had someone that could help you. Driver's door took me liek 10 and passenger like 20. Could do them both now in probably 5minutes max. Just had no light so didn't know where the dam wire was. When I get back from arkansas in 2 weeks I'm going to work on my other s13 and put some 6x9's in the front. They are probably going to stick out too much but I'll find out soon. I got a small box in the back with my 6x9's and then built a box to spec for my 12"comps.

Find the speaker wire in the door, tape your new wires SNUGGLY to the end of these wires and then look inside the car (kickpanel area) for the other end of these wires, and start trying to work them through.

the speaker wire will obviously start from where the head unit is installed... you're not gonna wanna reuse ANY of it if you're buying new speaker wire, so just rip out what you can, cut off the excess that might rattle in the door panel and run the new stuff from your deck to your speakers.
