Hello, I wanted to tackle the trans case and rear diff gear oil change tomorrow but was unsure how safe / risk of damage it would be to jack one corner up at a time and place jack stands on the pinch welds would be. I have a 3 ton floor jack and a 3 ton bottle jack with 4 jackstands that have the rubber protective grooves that sit on top of the jack stands.

The rear I can lift both sides at once from just behind the differential but the front I am a little more leery and find it easier to jack one side at a time. Can you safely jack a 2nd gen rogue up and place it on jack stands one corner at a time?

I also wanted to check transmission fluid level via the overflow plug and having the trans at the proper temperature. Can I leave the overflow bolt out as I add trans fluid with the transmission at temperature with the car running or should the car be shut down while adding trans fluid, brought back to running temperature then remove the bolt until a small stream appears?

You can jack it that way but you may need to do the front in two steps. It'll be a whole lot easier if you use ramps in front and then jackstand the rear.

When using the plug, the fluid needs to be warm. Adding cold fluid to a warm transmission obviously defeats that. Fill first, warm up, then drain off the excess.

Ramps at the front sounds alot easier. Thank you for the tips.

You're most welcome. BTW, a quick way to warm the fluid while the car is jacked is a Torque Converter stall. Car in gear, left foot on the brake, raise the RPM's to 1200~1500 for about 2 minutes. This raises the fluid temperature by way of hydraulic resistance in the TC, but because nothing except the pump and TC are spinning, it's harmless to the transmission. Just don't get carried away with the time or RPM, the temp will come up fast.

isn't it bad idea (generally speaking) of using those side "pinch welds" for lifting up vehicle? may be using suspension mounting points is better... also - haven't checked manuals regarding using rear diffs body as a jacking point (some cars have this option).

The "double dimples" on those pinch welds are the official jack points. The weld itself is the strongest (and stiffest) point in the whole unibody. That's why cars which take a t-bone at the B-pillar often end up totaled even when the damage looks minimal. It's like a ship with a broken keel, there's no fixing it.
