XM is "okay"... I prefer my own CDs or MP3s, so it's definately not worth 12-13.00 a month to me.

I asked on another forum about any ways to get cheaper service, and someone replied with the script below.

It's good for someone who wants to renew, or someone with a trial about to expire. I noticed I'm coming up on my 3 month mark, and I have received 3 mailings from XM, and now about 2 calls per day on my caller ID.

Here is the script I was given, and it got me service for $77/yr. which is around $6-7/mo. I also added NAV traffic for $3.99/mo.

Hope this helps someone like it did for me. They WILL do it.

First... call and make sure they are not going to auto renew you and charge your credit card. Have your radio code and call the customer service number. Tell them you want to let it expire because it's too expensive at full rates.

Then, they might offer you the $77 deal. If so, skip the rest of these steps and take it. If not, hang up after making sure it will not auto renew.

After it cancels, then call in with the script about having gotten a flyer. See the scan of the previous flyer posted HERE .

SCRIPT FOLLOWS:

Then call the 800-682-4114 number and read the script: "Hello. My subscription to XM Radio has expired but I just got a flyer with a special offer. I would like to take advantage of this offer for $77 for a year.

The old promotion code, "zwinback", according to recent posters who secured the deal, is no longer needed. If they ask for the radio code, give that to them. They WILL ask for it because that's the only way they can turn it on. If you had, in fact, gotten a flyer, it would have your radio code printed on it so have it handy. You can always get your radio code by tuning your XM radio to channel 0.

If at first you don't succeed, try again. Most people get it on the first try but others required 2 or 3 calls to different Customer Service reps.

Yes, you CAN get it over and over again. Many of us are on our third year at $77. But NOTE: This is not a front door, well known promotion. It is a quiet deal to get old customers back who have canceled. If you jump on the phone and say that you heard about this deal on the Internet/Acurazine, you might just kill the Golden Goose. Be considerate of those coming behind you.

Lastly: as you will read, the SCRIPT works. If you don't follow it, you're on your own. Take the time to read the instructions for best results

My subscription would have run out today Feb, 14, 2008. I called the 800-682-4114 number and said that it was expiring and I would like to take advantage of the $77.00 offer. The lady said sure! She never asked for a code or promotion info. She then asked if I wanted Nav, which I did, and when I gave her the credit card info she said she would give me an additional $12.95 off for using a Credit Card! Total for 1 year $111.05, sweet!Simple as that for me.

Now I feel stupid. I fell for the 13/month deal. I guess I'll cancel it and try for the 77/month deal now. Thanks for the heads up.

No need for scripts. They will not offer you the $77 deal, you just have to ask for it. Don't be shy

Worked great. The lady asked me for the code off my mailing and I said I was at work and I don't have it with me. She looked up my account info and gave me the $77 for a year with $48 for the traffic info for a year.

Thanks

They're also doing a $19 for 5 months promotion. Service rep on the phone said after I signed up for the 5 months she couldn't lock me in for the $77 a year to kick in right after my 5 months expired and that I would be automatically rolled into the full price. But she said to call just before the 5 months was up and that I shouldn't have a problem getting the $77 price.

XM just sent me an offer to reactivate at $4/mth for 5 months - $19.99. I couldn't resist that offer. I assume anyone could get the same deal if they wanted to renew.

Yesterday I signed up for XM Radio for the second time. I called the 866-576-1418 number and asked to re-subscribe at the $77.00 rate. The saleslady asked me for a promotional code and I told her “zwinback”. She told me that the “½ rate offer” was a one-time offer and I already used it last year. She checked for other offers that might help and suggested lifetime, or a three year membership. I told her that this was not going to be a good year as far as my finances and that I really didn’t want to cancel XM. She said there wasn’t any other offer she could present and told me to hold on while she transferred me to another department that might be able to assist me.The next saleslady was very nice, I mentioned the sad economic times and that I didn’t want to cancel my subscription and she told me to hold on. After about 2 minutes of waiting on hold she came back and told me they would honor the “1/2 rate offer”.I think “cancel” is the operative word. Along with the real-time- traffic charge of $35.00, my cost for XM service for this year is $111.93.I really dread making this call, but it wasn't unpleasant. I didn't have to beg too much and like my wife says "no harm in trying."

are you concerned about the Financial picture of Sirius/XM?

That company is just about out of it unless they can get some money to pay off their debt.

I have it but not so eager to sign up for 1 more year until the dust settles.

Do you trust the company now? If the company fails, would it make any real difference if you have a 1 year subscription or a 5 year subscription? If they change their lineup in such a way as to deliver less than they promised it seems to me you can then back out of the longer subscription while still in it.

The fact is I think they may well be in trouble, however so is basically everyone else and in this field they are pretty much the only option for all of the features such as coverage areas.

To me this does represent an issue with the built in systems and that is while you don't have to subscribe, you don't have options for somehow incorporating a replacement service in an easy fashion.

For example if you have some of the aftermarket systems you can transparently add new technologies as they become available.

Again I am a big fan of a computer in a car which is what is used to integrate all of this. Properly designed you could replace it just like you do in your home if the need to upgrade the entire system exist.

What happens 10 years from now if you still own a 2008 with Navigation? My guess is navigation itself will exist, location independant entertainment systems will exist and so on. What may not exist is what we have now and it probably would not be cost effective for Nissan to provide an upgrade path. On the other hand with a properly designed computer system, a display that could be replaced with an upgrade, etc. you could easily just gut what is in there and replace without concerns such as affecting other systems present. In industrial applications you have what is referred to as distributed control systems. You can replace parts and all of it without replacing the hardware being controlled. Perry

if the company has your 5 year subscription money and goes bankrupt how easy will it be to get your money back?

You can always download music to an iPod and use that in the G.

Depends of you pay monthly at the 5 year rate. or pay for the entire amount of front. Many subscriptions can be paid monthly with a commitment to the stated time period.

Does your iPod do Navigation?

I did not get Navigation,as I felt aftermarket products were a better choice if I go with Nav.the iPod download for the G37 is an alternative to the Sirius/XM if you are interested in music.jmo

I have an 80 gb iPod in mine. I don't like using aftermarket navigation that either sticks to the windshield or sits on top of the dash. On the other hand you don't have to play games with them because of all the lockouts of the on board unit.

Personally most of the time I like my music presented more like a radio program versus a playlist. A little less talk like on most local stations (although I just ran into a real good local FM station) To me the best competition will be something like HD if it were to really take hold and expand. Right now XM is pretty much available anywhere in the lower 48 states.

Will it survive, depends, maybe with the help of someone like DirectTV it will end up being even better than it is now.
