Depends on the situation. Most people can generally piece together better speakers by purchasing their own drivers (IE midranges/tweeters) and building a cabinet for them. However, quality is in the tuning. Having better drivers does NOT equal better sound. You can always get better sound out of better drivers, but there is work involved.
The benefit to going home audio, is the speakers are designed for that use. The cabinet is specifically designed for those speakers. Also, you don't have to worry about fabricating your own crossover to determine which frequencies go to the mids vs. the tweets. I would say the major benefit would be in all the R&D that goes into making the speakers work in that application. Personally, while I am a huge audio-nut, I would not make my own home speakers (and I didn't - I paid the price to get a nice set), but that's just my opinion.
