Please can any and all offer some help. I have just recently purchased a 1994 Q45t with 173,100mi. The problem started on my war to work when I noticed the car would not catch 1 or 2nd gear also Rever$e.After driving it on lunch break I got a slip light blink and reverse 1st & 2nd came to work. Then I would not get overdrive or third. The car (weather I mash or light press the gas) will hit 2nd and thats it for the gears. It will redline before it will shift and thats all. Also when I brake hard and hold it, she stalls out. Now from a light it will go in any gear and even seems to down shift nice and smooth and engage 2nd smoothly but if I get to 3k or better and let off the gas it only catches 2nd again once it hits the rpm's it just let off. I had known the previus owner as well as the original and I"m good friends with the cars mechanic. I would like to take with me some possible trouble shooting starting points when I see my friend for diagnoses. I just had the car serviced If anyone cares to know details I will provide. Sorry if too long but couldnt find previous post that matched well enough. Your help needed pls.

Ok but not ok. Just checked the ecu and got the 55 (engine ok) which does not help me so much. However as I was visually tracing my car and noticed (what l belive to be a ground) a wire hanging from the passanger side underbody. I have not been able to get under her to see clearly but did get the mirror out to look. It is attached to a screw just on the other side of the subframe ( the slotted rails along either side the car), but could not tell where it came from. I started to pull out the passanger seat and the carpet to inspect but work got in the way of time and thats all I got. After work I will try to slip the guy at the service station a five for a look under my car. If anyone has any other info on what I should look for while Im there Pls let me know.

Braided flat metal wire? Probably the ground strap from the exhaust system... I wouldn't think that has anything to do with a transmission issue.

Well, give us a little driveline service history, and tell us about the color and condition of the fluid.

BAckground is so important. transmission ever replaced on the Infiniti dealer performed service history? Have you installed and external ATF cooler?

Thought you'd never ask, Just had the transmission serviced about 2,800 miles ago. Also changed the belts, the plugs (wich looked just right, a nice golden brown with no divits or dents) and no telling when they were changed last. Also Oil and filter, and fuel filter, changed most hoses and all the clamps. Replaced fan blade. New brake pads front and back with new rotors in the front. Sealed some cracks in the air intake hose and built a support so it would no longer sagg,(of course cleaned filter and MAF, the right way) that being said the car belonged to two previous owners both of which had the car serviced regularly by the same men, for the most part any way by my good friend and his father (very qualified to say the least) who cared for the car like thier own baby. Now the only problem we ran into was the gasket for the pan didn't fit from the kit we had purchased from Auto Zone, so we cut a new one from a roll I had to purchase from A Zone. Any whoo their was a slight amount of shavings on the magnet and the fluid was well overdue for a change. Our collective opinion is to never flush all the fluid when doing a transmission service, (never ends well for some reason?????) however cleaned the pan and the magnet (those japanese, smart they are) fit the gasket drilled the holes spit shined and mounted fine. Now for the goods we used a Castrol ATF Dextron also B&M Dextron trick shift fluid with Lucas stop leak transmission stuff (an additive I believe) it seems to work wonders for older transmission's. Everything was fine untill last week or so I checked the fluid and it looks good still reddish and smooth no bubbles or inconsistancy smells just right for the time its been in just a slight sent. Measures the same every other day and no leaks so far. I am leaning toward the rear diff since at first I couldnt get the low gears and reverse and now I can't get 3rd and drive. The switch came on a left turn over a bump and the slip light came on. I don't know when the last time it's been changed but I'm sure it's past due. I don't have an FSM and desperatly need one in a hurry, I'd walk 40 Miles to get one tonight. Oh yea no ATF cooler yet but I'f I get this running right it's good as installed.

Do some more reading, and get a complete mechanical exchange of fluid, pan drop, new screen filter, gasket and one time bolts from http://www.everythinginfiniti.com ASAP.

Lucas is junk. http://www.bobistheoilguy.com

The differential is probably find, but change the lubricant with a synthetic. Don't know why you would diagnose it as being bad from your comments.

Wow Bob is the man wish I had known that sooner. Thanks for the help I will get this done before you can say "damn I'm the man" but if it works you can say it all you want, and the rear differential was more like a thought that had just popped in my head. Well I got work to do and once again thanks a s**t load for the help it is very much appreciated

I don't think Bob did any testing at operating temperature. I have used Lucas in my engine, transmission, and power steering for years in a lot of my previous cars.

Be sure to check the level of fluid. If it is over filled, the transmission can act funny.

Layla has 140k on my $1900 transmission rebuild. She won't go into forward gears, unless i put the shifter in 3rd when it is cold. She works fine once the car is warmed up. Recently, she will slip into neutral if I push her too hard when cold. The shifting has never been "great", but as long as she moves in the direction I put the shifter in, I am happy. I have had 2 complete system flushes in the 140K, and I don't have a transmission cooler (she is a 94 wiht the larger factory cooler).

I did a nice burnout Wednesday night. It felt kinda nice to let loose.

Your probably right about Bob but he makes a good point on some thing's. Well I did change the fluid but did not drop the pan since I am simply trouble shooting the issue. I got no change in performance. I am about to test the TPS output and other things of that nature. When I did a diagnoses test I got AT CHECK. So now I am going for the meter and the optimistic outlook one needs before he faces the fact's that it really is cancer. I need this car to be Proper for I have no love for a car that can not handle my presence in the driver seat. I will do what I have to do with no shortcuts. I am the type of person who believes in doing the job right the first time, this Idea keep's me doing more things I like doing like watching tail-lights get smaller in my rear view. I really think after reading more and feeling out some things the TPS might be the key. I think Qship posted the possiblity. The really wierd thing is that the car only feels like it shifts to 2nd gear but it down shifts threw three gears from D posistion...??????? "Come on good Karma"
