gears cut out

my speedo doesnt turn on for a very very long time after the car heats up, i could drive all night and the speedo still doesnt come on sometimes, but in the summer it turns on almost immidiatly. when the speedometer is off 3rd, 4th, and 5th cut out when driving on the highway, but when the speedo finnaly kicks on then it doesnt cut out at all. this makes it very hard to race. can someone give some info?

I'm thinking this is one or more of the position switches on the transmission or the speed sensor. Wait for NISTECH to see this, I'm sure he has a better idea than I do.

my coupes speedo used to do that, but when i tapped on it or the dash it would start working momentarily. I replaced it, fixed the problem, and deleted 100k miles

your car is not actually cutting out is it? if you think that your speedo may be associated with it, the speedo itself may not be the problem. my speedo itself was faulty, $20 at wrecking yard for a new speedo fixed my problem

ps. the same car of mine (coupe) used to cut out at 45-5000rpm, with an unassociated problem

you most likely have soldier joint problems on the back of your speedo cluster. Is this a digital dash or a analog? the reason it cuts out when the speedo is dead is due to the speedo is the speed input to the ecm. once it goes dead the car is basically in a fail safe. the combination of the trans being in higher gears and the ecm not seeing any speed related to it causes the ecm to hold back on how much fuel your getting into the cyl.

Get your cluster out and look at the joints on the back. If you have a digital dash you may also have the control unit failure which is also usually soldier problems at its main connector.
