Gear Shift Locks in Park

2004 Nissan Sentra, Auto Trans, Gear shift locks in Park. Only way it will move is with Emergency Unlock Button. Then Button on Shift Lever will work. Repeats everytime it is put in Park.

Check your brake switch, normally you have to depress the brake when taking it out of "Park".

The brakes work fine and the brake lights come on. Could there still be a problem with the brake switch related to the gear shift locking in Park? I have not checked the brake switch yet, but just wondering.

Also are are your brake lights factory bulbs?

there is probably a solenoid that is controlled byt he brake pedal. You push the pedal down and it unlocks the shifter. it's either a mechanical or electrical problem.

I have literally no technical advise on this subject, but damn, that would piss me off to no end.

The BRAKE SWITCH was the culprit! I've had no more problems since it was replaced. (I still carry my screwdriver with me all of the time, though, just in case...) I appreciate all of your posts and insight!
