I get a clunking noise when I turn the steering - I looked beneath while a friend turned the steering - the bolt for gear housing mounting bracket moved up and down as the steering was moved and made the clunking noise. The car recently had the oil filter housing job done and since then the noise started coming.

The bolt needs to be tightened to 88-108 per the manual specs, I am assuming it should be rock tight and should not be moving up and down - before I pin it tight, wanted to ask you guys to make sure the bolt indeed needs to be solid tight.

Oh, good Lord! I'm don't know that system at all, but I do know that bolts carry tension, shear, or both. That bolt is doing neither. The 88-108 called out is in foot-lbs??? That amounts to thousands of pounds of pre-load (tension). PLEASE have that fixed ASAP. While you're under there, look around for any other glaring oversights.

Thanks guys - tightened it up, quick and easy access - did not even need jacks, took a ride and it is absolutely perfect on the steering wheel - previously it was vibrating a lot and during turns, it was making disturbing noises -

Every time I work on this car myself - I tend to despise these auto shops - for them it is just another car taking time up on the rack.

This time it was the so called "Master Techs" missed up tightening the gear housing mounting bolts and I have been driving this for over a month now thinking it came back from a reputable workshop.

When I did my Plenum, found two intake runners did not even have the bolts in them (not loose, they were not there at all) - found them lying in the engine valley - this was done by Infiniti of Scottsdale. The previous owner paid for all 8 injectors and under the plenum hose replacement, however; the EGR was clogged 110% - so these dudes never cleaned it up [this all was done 20K miles ago and there is no way it will clog this bad that early]. One of the pressure regulator hoses were missing as well. Perhaps due to missing intake plenum bolts there was not enough vacuum anyways for it to make the otherwise expected "whistling noise" indicating missing regulator vacuum hose. And, also - they never bothered with the throttle body gasket either - there was none when I unbolted it.

Dealer or no dealer - they are all the same... it is just the degree of recklessness that makes the marginal difference.

Thanks guys for youe help, it is much better now.

I Still have the driveshaft in my trunk [gottn from yard], have not got a chance to take the drive shaft to a driveline shop for testing - perhaps next week.

Another example of why we should buy reliable, well made cars. Less opportunity for those "Master Techs" to screw up our machinery!

Firstq, I would get that documented with the shop ASAP and demand that they look things over for free to make sure they didn't forget anything else. Is it possible the loose bolt could have caused any damage? It would be on their shoulders but only if you have the evidence to support your claims.

Yep - DAE's right. If you call Eric Raesen (service writer) over at Inf of Scotts, tell him you know me (Greg Childs) and you are a NICO member. He's a solid guy, knows we send them TONS of business, and should be able to document (and perhaps rectify) the problem.
