I own an 89 nissan 240sx with ka24e and i am having troubles shifting from first to second without grinding. If i shift at around 2500-3000 rpms it slides in nicely but if im at high rpms or trying to quickly shift i get the horrible grinding noise. This is only wiith second gear, all other gears are fine.. Could this be a sycro or maybe my cluth is done.??

Sounds like your synchro is ground up pretty bad. I used to grind, 1st to 2nd, and 2nd to 3rd. I changed my transmission oil to Amsoil. Never heard it again. In the meantime, you could do that before you get another transmission. (cheaper to pick up a 5spd s13 transmission than having your transmission opened up by a shop)

Yah i heard if i changed up my cluth fluid (dot 3 brake fluid) this would also help out. Is amsoil a synthetic fluid or is it just thicker than the average? thnks for the response.

Where did you find Amsoil? The Amsoil test results look great and I want to test the stuff out.

Definately a syncro. the reason why its not grinding at 2500 rpm is because you're rev-matching the engine rpm with the next gear's speed.

You can try putting some Redline stuff in the gearbox, that might make shifting a little easier, but like Skydragoness said, ultimately it's easier to get a new errr...previously loved transmission.

My 2nd-3rd grinds a bit when it gets cold. The synchros in our transmissions tend to get a bit grumpy with age.

Sounds like i will ultimately end up replaceing my gearbox.

Do you guys think i will get away with just getting one from the wrecker and replacing the fluid and hopeing that it will last?? How long do you guys think i have till the day it decides to not work??

Will replaceing the fluid be a quick fix to mask the problem or will it solve it?

Im on my 3rd transmission now and this one is on its way out. A LOT of the problems in these trannies is a result of the main and countershaft bearings going out and then it wears out the synchro's. Ultimately the best solution is having the trans rebuilt (by a reputable shop) or buying a remanufactured trans. The salvage yard trannies will last a while but they will eventually end up with the same problems. I have been nursing mine along waiting for the opportunity to buy a reman unit as soon as I get the money.
