I've got the motor completely out and entirely apart and thought it would be a good time to install gauges. I need some opinion on what would be considered useful and essential gauges? I'm already planning on boost, EGT, and oil pressure for sure, but am debating on oil temp. I'm planning on installing a PFC with hand controller which will show several parameters and am thinking of getting the electronic boost controller add-on so I can log boost levels for tuning in place of the separate boost gauge. Comments? Opinions on this setup?

I'm looking at getting Defi-Link gauges since there is only one control unit and less wiring. It's about $200 more than standard Defi gauges. Any comments on Defi vs other gauge brands?

dont bother with EGT, unless you have AF numbers to back it up you wont know what the numbers mean.

here's what i reccomend

1) wideband (AEM UEGO for example). absolutley irreplacable2) water temp3) oil presssure4) oil temprature5) boost/vaccum

as for brand, defi's are amazing. i HIGHLY reccomend getting something with a programmable warning system (like the defi's) because nobody can watch their gauges all the time, and if all of a sudden your water temp shoots up 15 degrees you may not notice it, but your engine might!

defi's have a shift light like warning, its programmable to different colors for different warnings. like green for water temp, red for oil pressure, etc

defi gauges are the absolute ****!i run the link bf gauges...they dont have a colour change warning like kamin said tho...not sure where he got that one.as far as gauges i have oil pressure, water temp, egt on the defi side and a wideband running into my e-01 which displays boost, rpm and wideband at all times.while defi gauges are expensive the quality is most certianly there.

im happy with my apexi el IIs. they have warning and peak and hold.

id say gettem all. good investments.

boost, water temp, oil temp, oil pressure, fuel pressure, wideband, egt

electrical guages for sure, with warnings are great and in my eyes a must. when im on the track catching a blinking red dot is much easier then trying to read my guages.

I have an Innovate LM-1 with LMA-2 RPM converter shipping Friday. I should have mentioned that. I got the LMA-2 option so I can log A/F if I'm on the road and don't have a laptop with me. So, I will have A/F number to back the EGT gauge.

Glad to hear about Defi's quality because I really like the way they look and didnt want to drop a ton of dough on something with the quality of APC. Here is what Kamin was talking about:

"Each gauge has two LEDs. One LED illuminates when the gauge pointer exceeds a warning value which is discretionary with the Control Unit II. The other LED illuminates when the gauge pointer exceeds a past maximum value."

As far as getting water and/or oil temp gauges, wouldn't you be able to just get by with the oil temp gauge and have the same amount of knowledge as having both? If your oil temp spikes, your water temp should spike after the fact, correct?

I am running Autometer Cobalt gauges for boost, water temp and oil pressure (boost is mechanical) then I have a AFX Wideband. So far I have no complaints on any of them.

water and oil temps are not directly related.oil temps tend to be cooler than coolant but still can get hot.i can tell when the oil gets hot in my car based upon how much pressure it reads on the gauge.
