Hi all, newbie here I have a quick question but before I do I just wanted to say nice forum you guys got here. I just wanted to know how do I go about adding some gauges to my car ( 1990 240sx fastback SOHC) I saw a few gauge pod setups with the normal water, oil and electic, but I was told I shouldnt do thid because I have to dissconnect the stock sensors and it will trigger my check engine light and probably cause the car to run poorly, does anyone know how true this is and how do I get around it because I hate those dummy lamps that always come on AFTER something has gone wrong, and are there any setups ( gauges ) out there someone would recommend. Thanks in advance

as long as u do it while the car is off or better yet unhook the battery then install everything properly u shouldnt get any check engine lights. even if u do u can reset the ECU to get rid of them unless u messed up the sensor. but most electrical guages u tap into the ECU wire for it so u wont be near the sensor, right. im going with autometer guages like most people they're a decent price and work. lots of different styles too.

I would recomend an oil pressure gauge first (mechanical) you can get a 1/8bspt tee and you dont have to worry about losing a stock sensor. Also a water temp gauge would be my next recomendation. ( Are you NA or TURBO) if your turbo, then a boost gauge for sure. YOu can get decent prices on gauges from summit. Thier latest catalog has a nice gauge section and is priced fair. YOu should have no problems disconection the sensors. Whenever doing electrical work, you should allways disconect the negative battery cable. I hope this information can help you get started in the right direction.

no gauges will trigger the SES light other than the speedo and Tachometer....

All of the others are simply dirrect leads accepting power and grounding out, not returning signal to the ECU.
