I have a quick wuestion for you guys. I have a set of white gauge replacements not the cheap overlays and I am trying to install them. I have the bottom part of the steering wheel column cover off. Do I have to drop the steering wheel to get the cluster out? It seems like I could get my hands in the hole to get the cluster out but it is being held in by all the wiring. What is the best way to get the cluster out? The Chilton manual doesnt help at all.

I'm not sure if you have an s13... or how much it differs from the s14... but the cluster can be removed without dropping the stering column on an s14. Once you have the plastic around the gauges removed... there are 4 screws that hold the cluster in place. Then it will slide out enough to reach behind it and pop the wiring harness(es) off. I haven't had mine off for a couple years... so I forget if there is more than one set of wires.... but I know I didn't have to drop the steering column to get it out.

I have a s13. It almost seems like I could unplug everything how I have everything off now but I dont want to break or mess up anything.

the reason for dropping the steering wheel is to keep from cracking the black surround piece....it's not a big process like it sounds..you take out the two 12mm(i think..maybe 10mm)...bolts and then the steering wheel just sags down a little to give you more room to work with..if you don't do this, you will most likley crack the black plastic surround piece...it's not hard at all...

How far along are you? It sounds like you have gotten your gauges out but have not gotten them installed.

I have had the whole thing in, out, broken, replaced, dismantled, put back together, put back in again... so I have a little bit of experience on the subject and may be able to help out.

So far I just dropped the plastic cover under the steering column. I beleive I have to take the two steering column bolts almost out then I should be able to pull the cluster out.

take them all the way out...that will drop the steering wheel enough to undo the black plastic bezel around the instrument gauge and then take the cluster out-
