The problem is that my dash lights do not work. My mechanic has gone through alot of the things he thinks it is. He has replaced the dimmer switch and checked all the bulbs plus a few other things. Does anyone have any good route to go about fixing this,my mechanic is telling me that it will take hours of labor-- so pretty much he doesn't and is going to charge me for it. That Sucks!!!!!

Please help me as soon as you can!

hmm, did u do some aftermarket stereo install lately? or was your car stereo stolen lately? the latter caused my dash lights to go out...some exposed wires touched each other when theives got my aftermarket unit...

if neither was done, another thing to check was the <TCU> time control unit, a white box located under the driver-side kick panel...

i dunno yet, carlos, but i read in the audio section: when putting on an aftermarket unit to replace the stolen one... there's a blue illumination wire that you're not supposed to hook up & defenitely ground your new unit to the body <don't use harness' ground>

goto here to start doin some research on the wires... i got them somewhere, just have this fix on the backburner.

I ghetto-rigged some rice led lights on my dash & put an illuminated switch on the square hole next to the cigar lighter... i also have ghetto-rigged the stereo so i can turn it on w/out my key in the ignition.

Ok so, ive never had my stereo stolen but i did do a little ghetto riggin years back. However if you asked me what I did I couldn't tell ya. Where would I start? How would I check the TCU? What fuse would it be under the hood?

Thanks

well, you can physically open the unit up carefully & actually see burnt solder joints...

hmm, i don't think there's a fuse under the hood for dash lights... maybe check all fuses under the driver side kick panel. The mech was rite in terms of checking the dimmer switch... that acts like a fuse for the system <weird> if the bulb blew again in that dimmer switch, he'll haveta trace the short circuit.

ok u have the stock stereo or an aftermarket on there now?

i finally found some documents on this prob..cutnpaste time:------

Aftermarket head units use their own intelligent electronic dimming mechanisms, and therefore should NOT be connected to the "dimmer" wire.

Before the S-14, the S-13 radios often actually did not have a ground wire in the harness. These radios were grounded from physically being in contact with the chassis of the vehicle. This came by way of the ISO brakets that mount to the side of the radio and are then machine screwed in to the dash pieces which are connected to the chassis and conduct electricity so the complete the ground path for the radio. Does this makes any sense to you?

Just run a whole new ground from stereo to somewhere else. I used a shifter bolt. Then replace your taillight fuse in the fusebox. Oh yeah, I am guessing that your taillights don't work but the brake lights do. Hope this helps.

Please take heed to the following wiring chart and pay careful attention to the wires you are NOT supposed to use. There are THREE of them. http://www.installdr.com/Harne...g.pdf

If you have used any of these wires and you're experiencing these problems, the first step you should take is remove these wires, tape the ends off and leave the alone. From there the next repair would be the Dimmer switch and check the TCU for burnt soldered joints.

it's actually just two wires, but one wire is in two places. Red/Blue which is the illumination power (in two places, on the larger harness and on the smaller harness). Red/Yellow, which is the illumination gound, on the larger harness alone.

I actually have no stereo installed right now, as i am completely restoring the car. This dash lights problem is one thing prohibitting me from getting it installed. I will check those other things though. Thanks for all the help so far.

What exactly are you bumping?? info... what did you check etc.

You don't need a stereo currently installed for your TCM to be bad.. If it's blown, its blown! Pull out the TCM, takes 5 minutes, and visually inspect it. When putitng a new headunit in assuming you do be sure and bypass the factory amps and avoid the dimmer wire so you don't blow another if that turns out to be your problem.

Oh an easy way to test if the tcm is bad is with you headlights off look at your clock in the cluster then hit the overhead lamp/s. If the clock goes off TCM is your prob.

Thanks,

My clock does exactly that, I don't know why I didn't write that. I will change my tcm and let you guys know how it turns out.

Does anybody know where to get a cheap (but quality) TCM?
