Gauge Dimmer issue

Well I am trying to hook up my boost gauge and oil pressure gauge into my dash light dimmer switch. It has a few wires coming out of it, after using a multimeter I found that the orange/red wire controls the brightness of the dash, simple right? Yes, until I hooked up one of the gauges to it and tested it. The dash dimming works perfect, except the gauge dimmes opposite of the dash. Example: As I dim the dash the gauge gets brighter....I tried reversing the wires on the gauge and still have the same problem...anyone have a clue what the heck is going on? It's on a 1989 240sx. Thanks....
